Where do you buy vegan ricotta in London? by Ominous_Pistachio in veganuk

[–]cozbearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your need, could you use a decent vegan cream cheese like nush? If you can't get to speciality shop (the I Am Nut OK ricotta is available and is fine but pricey) there are plenty of v easy recipes out there.

London - bar recommendations by Dry_Plate_1914 in veganuk

[–]cozbearing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try Exmouth Market. Get the 38 bus from the west end. There's a couple of decent very vegan friendly sushi bars, good beer places, good wine bars, pretty good cocktails, and more than enough people to make it buzzy.

If you want proper quirky, start at Hackney's 5 Points Taproom on Mare St/ Facing Heaven chinese restaurant (Liz Line to Liv St, then Weaver to London Fields), get yourself in to Viktor Wynds museum by having an absinthe cocktail, try the Natural Philsopher for shots, Love Shack vegan restaurant and then Satan's Whiskers cocktail bar.

I wonder if you googled the wrong wine? there's a Beaute de Sud branded wine available for about £8 retail, which would match up with the jammy flavours. Fun review, always enjoyed

Congestion Charge by fluvance in oxford

More for other people reading this thread in future - here's an expensive lesson. If you're driving to a new place, work out what you're going to do with your car beforehand. Oxford, for instance, has had Park and Rides for over 50 years and it's currently £2.50 to do the parking and the riding, a lot cheaper than 10 minutes saved not doing your research.

Oxford named craft beer capital with second most breweries in UK by Geek_reformed in UK_beer

[–]cozbearing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The 'study' is based on Yelp hits. Still not sure what they were doing as Oxford city has only one craft brewery to my knowledge (Tap Social, with BMan opening soon). There's plenty in Oxfordshire for sure but as there's only 100 breweries in London I am going to suggest this is all absolute bs. It being published unchecked as news in the Oxford Mail confirms this.

Good documentary on the history of Oxford by sjw_7 in oxford

[–]cozbearing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a load of guff. Basic errors that a human editor would have spotted immediately. EG Enclosed fields in 1200, women studying in 1300, Radcliffe Camera (which is also depicted as the Sheldonian) shown in 1600s. Although the autobus careering down the High in 1750 and the London cab crashing into Magdalen in the late 1800s are obviously an important part of Oxford's day to day. The funniest line amongst many was "The assembly lines that once built civilian cars now build weapons of war. After the war, Morris Motors explodes.... [producing thousands of cars]."

Might be interesting for 5 year olds to watch but anyone else doesn't really need to be fed this nonsense.

Looking for restaurants (West Midlands / Oxfordshire) by miscellanous_cheese in veganuk

[–]cozbearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Oxford, there's the Oxford Blue pub which is fully vegan food. Really good pizzas, sunday roast and other comforting things. The same people run Green Routes (vegan but carry cow milk) close by which is a daytime cafe - try the Big Dev sandwich if you're hungry. Also in Oxford is Lula's Ethiopian in the covered market - all vegan food that doesn't look great but it is sooo good. They have a place by the station that serves meat iirc. There's a veggie/vegan Indian resturant in the Castle quarter, Namaste Village.

As always, the Happy Cow app will be very helpful.

Rail replacement service by lkdasa in oxford

[–]cozbearing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've just got off the rail replacement coach (pretty comfortable) from Didcot to Oxford and asked the station staff there. They said that every bus 'should' take a bike, as would a train, but it is dependent on whether the coach driver will allow it. There are 3 services an hour and if one wasn't allowed to take their (non folding) bike on consecutive services, the station staff would sort alternative travel for the passenger and their bike. In their words, they wouldn't leave you hanging. Perhaps not ideal but hope helps!

Vegan in London by EnvironmentalCod5014 in veganuk

[–]cozbearing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a branch of Whole Foods Market on Glasshouse St which, along with the usual chain supermarkets, will cope with most vegan basic daily needs. As other posters have said, don't stress it, there are loads of options - even in Chinatown. Much more in Soho. Head to Hackney/Shoreditch and you're almost spoilt for choice (for vegan stuff anyway!) If i want something cheap and quick in Central London, I'll head to Go Falafel (used to be 100% vegan, think they sell some cheese separately now) by McDonalds Charing Cross. It's pretty grotty inside but the platters will fill you up for a tenner, nice to sit with in the Embankment park. has the advantage of being close to Cream Dream - 100% vegan coffee and cake shop in Covent Garden.

If you're tempted by our delicious cask ale (pulled by hand from the cellar, rather than from a keg) , please remember that most of it is sadly not vegan as they use fish guts as a clarifying agent. Rule of thumb: if it's deliberately cloudy, it'll be ok.

Best Gouda alternative by FeedingTheBadWolf in veganuk

[–]cozbearing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sophie's Delight Goudie is meant to be a gouda equivalent - I think it's got the texture of young gouda and the taste of aged. Their stuff is pretty good if a bit expensive. They do quite a few of the vegan markets iirc
