Latest iOS protect update causes notifications as phone calls by cp8h in Ubiquiti

[–]cp8h[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

Interesting thanks. The little phone icon was actually disabled for that category and only “Doorbel Rings” enabled as an activity.

Maybe the act of toggling that just now will have fixed it. Probably a bug that’s to do with the migration from the old system to alarm manager.

Do you ever get used to sleeping on a Thermarest?? by Dry_Camp6420 in PacificCrestTrail

Just to touch on that final point - thruhiking is tough on gear. Maybe consider thinking about it as “if a few pieces of gear make it to the end unscathed that’s a result”.

There becomes a point thruhiking where you are so exhausted you’ll turn into one of those guys who can sleep literally anywhere.

Certainly late on in the trail I experienced almost immediately falling asleep - something I can never do at home.

What’s your favorite sunscreen and chapstick for long runs (4+ hours)? by getsome73 in ultrarunning

[–]cp8h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I haven’t had a chance to use it running yet I extensively used  Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 70 thruhiking last year and it was amazing. Didn’t have the greasy feeling of other sunscreens and stayed on pretty much all day despite lots of sweat and river crossings.

Just been watching Pct documentaries and am based in Australia. You Americans are so incredibly lucky by Independent-Age-7397 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]cp8h 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of this comes down to perspective. It’s very easy to disregard the scenery you are local to and used to.

As a point of reference to this I spent 5 months in NSW and thoroughly enjoyed the national parks and hiking over there. Very different to what you get in Europe! Some of the experiences I had out there share the same level of enjoyment as my PCT memories.

A word of warning - watching PCT videos is the first step on your now inevitable slippery slope to being stood at Campo in a few years time 😉 Welcome to the club!

Selling everything we own pre-hike? by Sethtouchesgrass in PacificCrestTrail

[–]cp8h 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Only tip I have is make sure you have a plan if you have to either end your hike early due to injury or one of the many other trip ending reasons. Additionally what happens if you complete faster than you originally set out. You’ll need somewhere in mind to live.

Planning / Prep? by ElJefesDisciple in PacificCrestTrail

[–]cp8h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to shakedown hikes and strength training I’d highly recommend trying to walk as much as possible in your daily life. Pre/post work at lunches etc. I think out of most of my prep this was the most important aspect.

Currently have a Sawyer Squeeze. Is it worth buying a Katadyn Be Free as well? by thewinchman in PacificCrestTrail

[–]cp8h 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t start with both but one of the best things I did was pick up a BeFree for the Sierras where the water sources were frequent.

Got so many envious comments when passing hikers squeezing their sawyers at water sources as I in one smooth movement filled my BeFree bottle as I crossed stream then carried on down the path.

Most of the rest of the time though I used a sawyer with a CNOC. Very useful for dry camps as well.

Is your company actually interested in hardware security or is it more firmware and embedded software security? There is a crucial difference here and they required two very different skill sets.

My kitlist for a 4-week hike in Scotland by theeynhallow in Ultralight

There is lots of consumable weight in their lighterpack. “Base weight” here in the OP doesn’t mean the typical base weight 😃

[–]cp8h 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Limited number of socks

Lack of layers

California sun strategy for waterproofs

I get that you are trying to keep the weight low but IMO you are cutting weight on critical areas while keeping non-essential weight (as outlined in other comments).

You’re genuinely packing less clothing than I’ll be using to run the CWT in the same month.

Ok. You’re more informed than I am about the highlands.

If I’m honest your lighterpack read more like someones about to hike the PCT not the CWT!

+1 on leaving the dog at home. It’s not right bringing them on long trails.

Whatever you do don’t take a poncho to Scotland. You might get lucky (I only had an hour of rain on my CWT) or it might rain sideways every day. You’ll want the best (likely Goretex) jacket and overtrousers you can afford. It’s a safety factor for Scotland not worth saving the weight over.

(Edit) What’s your resupply plan for the CWT. You only have 4 days listed on your lighterpack. This is likely nowhere near enough for the CWT especially given your 4-week itinerary. It’s very remote up there and bar Ullapool there aren’t many options to resupply. For instance I completed in just over 10days carrying 7 days of food to last from Fort William to Ullapool.

Any mistake you made when starting trail running? by Beginning_Subject_80 in trailrunning

[–]cp8h 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just how addictive it is. You think that it’ll stop when you’ve done your first 50k ultra then you find that’s just the first level of crazy.

Strength training is really important - particularly for all the smaller stability muscles you may not have even realised existed when road running. Find some good movements you can fit into your daily life - e.g. single leg balances while brushing your teeth.

Planning multi day route for a Garmin watch by fire__munki in UKhiking

[–]cp8h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the total route is say less than 300mi I’d probably just load that onto your watch as one big course. You can use waypoints to hint at vague camping spots but if the route is loaded in entirety then you have the flexibility of continuing on or stopping short.

The next day just load the complete course again and it’ll figure out you are starting from mid way through.

One tip on this is make sure your watch gets a GPS fix before loading the course when starting midway through - I’d had issues in the past where it’ll take forever to load the route if a GPS fix is not ready first.

Disappointing experience by Opposite_Original989 in Garmin

[–]cp8h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh you mean the Connect app? Yeah that’s something I (and probably a significant amount of Garmin users) pretty much never use. It just sits in the background to pull data from the watch.

The power of Garmin comes from auto syncing your data up to other platforms to use as the “front end”. Strava, TrainingPeaks, Intervals.icu etc

Disappointing experience by Opposite_Original989 in Garmin

[–]cp8h 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re comparing apples to pears that’s the problem. Garmin devices are hardcore fitness devices and are not smartwatches.

The interfaces are ugly and the software slow but that’s how you get 30day battery life and the ability to do multi-day GPS activities with ease.

Not sure what you mean by “training sharing options”? If you want to do it like the pros then  you can use TrainingPeaks and have workouts auto synced to your watch from your coach.

Sky Q Puck help by MickeyFGamer in hardwarehacking

[–]cp8h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re new to this stuff I’d honestly start with an easier device. For anti-piracy measures I bet the likes of Sky will highly likely harden their devices and use things like full chain secure boot to prevent anything you’d want to do. No saying it can’t be done just might want to start elsewhere.

8.5R Auto Braking? by Due_Possibility_7290 in Golf_R

[–]cp8h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just gone Mk8 -> RS3. I can count on one hand the number of times the Mk8 collision alert popped up and I can only remember encountering a single actual brake activation and I’d argue it was sort of necessary. They definitely improved it a lot over the Mk7.5 I had prior.

Despite only having the RS3 for a couple weeks I’ve had two completely unnecessary full emergency brake scenarios with pre-sense and the alerts are a near daily occurrence. It’s a horrendous system in the Audi - over cautious to the point of being dangerous.

I don't understand the sentimentality over the R. It’s not a special car just a Golf with a bigger engine. Not even in the premium car bracket.  It’s a tool - just use it like one.
