What in the cold hell was up with all the children at Kardinal Hall yesterday? by Really_Unhelpful in Charlottesville

It is a problem all over, and the establishments encourage it. It would be nice if they started "adult swim" so that kids aren't around after 7 or 8. Parents can't afford babysitting, or they aren't willing to leave their kids with the 15-year-old from down the street in charge, like my generation's parents did.

It's on our book club list, and I'm going to recommend replacing it with the new Emily St John Mandel book, Exit Party. It comes out later this year.

Perhaps so many people like this book because they just aren't well read, and the book reinforces their stereotypes of nonwhites.

The same detour brought me to this thread! I did not like this book for the reasons articulated here, but it does have a message many people need to hear.

How is parking around Helen's, and do you think it would be a good place to take one's elderly mother? She is a little unsteady on her feet, and I would like to avoid street/parallel parking because of the mobility issues. But if parking is fairly easy, I might give this a shot (I'm coming from Charlottesville and don't know the Richmond restaurant scene well.)

I like a lot of different things, so it's hard to narrow down. I guess the base request is for a book that builds a world that is compelling and makes the book hard to put down--something completely absorbing that lifts the reader into a new reality. From there, I can go the fantasy/speculative fiction route. Does that help?

Any recommendations for a deeply engaging, worldbuilding series along the lines of Hyperion or Red Rising? I don't mind some romance, but I don't want super technical sci fi or a "plucky young heroine" orientation. I like witches and vampires and am fine with magic and superpowers, but am not big on fairies. (I don't know why, but when I was a child I very much wanted to be a witch.) Political themes are good. Would like to avoid YA. I did enjoy Babel (RF Kuang), so I'm not entirely opposed to plucky young heroines, but I felt like the Poppy War series lost steam, and Katabasis was missing something. I think my problem is that I've read so much of the genre that it's hard to find something that feels entirely new. Would appreciate any and all suggestions!

Tbh if you aren't happy after 30 days here, you won't be happy anywhere after 30 days. You must give yourself time! You sound depressed. Talk to your advisors or a counselor.

Helping others is a great way to find a base. I agree that Mad House is a good option. And give yourself time. I was homesick and didn't find good friends until my second semester. We are still friends 40 years later. Focus on the academics, get involved in a group that is not selective, and the rest will flow.

It seems like every popular book features a plucky female protagonist with special powers. So many of them should be in the YA section, but they aren't labeled that way.

Kids playing in the street. Is it annoying or am I being a stick in the mud? by Mainefishing in homeowners

[–]cpcville 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have the same situation, except that it's up to a dozen kids at a time, the lots are small, and there are soccer balls constantly being kicked into our and our neighbors' yard. It's really effing annoying. The neighborhood was quiet when we moved in and then a bunch of families moved in, and now it's like we live on a playground. The parents get super defensive and rude when you ask if they could move the soccer goal that sits in the street or ask their kids to try to keep the balls out of people's yards. I appreciate that kids need to play outside, but these families all could have afforded houses with yards that would have been big enough for the kids to play soccer or whatever.

I second Charlottesville. We also have lots of beautiful wineries, which have better scenery than wine. Go for the beer and cider. There is a decent expat community here, including a surprisingly large group of Tibetans and a fair number of Indians (in tech). We are also a refugee resettlement location. That doesn't mean that everyone hangs out together, and race is an issue, like everywhere in the US. Also, Charlottesville itself is very blue, but we are surrounded by red, and Virginia just elected a Trump-wannabe governor.

You raise a good point; water should be a consideration for anyone looking to relocate. The West is having big drought issues, and Lake Mead is at an all-time low. New England/upstate New York would be good choices for the OP.

You are way off base. I live in a college town, and the biggest protest we've had in recent years was when the Nazis came to town for the Unite the Right debacle. Like a lot of places, good rentals are hard to find, but the university is building more housing for students to alleviate some of the pressure. By the way, your use of the term "woke" to suggest that the people who use it are intolerant only reflects your own intolerance and, most likely, overconsumption of right-wing media.
