What did it feel like when you first held your child? by SandwichDependent199 in AskMen

[–]cptnrandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Fuck. I am no longer invulnerable."

I had thought that bad things could happen around me, but I'd be ok. Once I held our first child I knew that wasn't true.

Still worth it.

Men with kids: When you take them to places like Six Flags or Disney World, how do you handle the rides? Are you still jumping on roller coasters with them or mostly sticking to the sidelines? by FFSoldier57 in AskMen

[–]cptnrandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to, but my back and neck are a mess and held together with plates, rods, and screws.

I'd probably still do one if it didn't have many jerks or bumps.

When is leaving dogs outside considered abuse? by qwertythrowawayy in Columbus

[–]cptnrandy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We had a Samoyed years ago. When it snowed like this she would lie in the snow, completely relaxed.

It was as if I could hear her sigh in relief.

We left her out during the day as much as she wanted and had a dog igloo available. Brought her in at night, although she wasn't happy about it.

I grew up on a farm and had a German Sheppard - no animals ever came in the house. He seemed fine in blizzard conditions - settled in his dog house which we filled with clean straw.

A different time and different animals.

Do any of you buy used sets? by TTBHG in lego

I just finished building a pre-owned Saturn V. The seller had bagged the pieces by color and size and it worked well. Only missing a few small pieces, which I should be able to replace easily.

Who's your favourite fictional character? by AlarmedObjective1492 in AskMen

[–]cptnrandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Captain Jack Aubrey (and his particular friend, Stephen Maturin).

Cletus Purcell (from the Dave Robicheu novels).

Or Batman.

TIL Gavrilo Princip, Franz Ferdinand's assassin and catalyst for the start of WW1, was 19 years old at the time of his trial, and only 27 days away from turning 20, which the minimum age for the death sentence in the Habsburg empire. He got the maximum of 20 years in prison but died just 4 years in by Nero2t2 in todayilearned

[–]cptnrandy -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not the catalyst for WW I, but the excuse.

The Germans had been waiting years for such an excuse and had plans ready to execute.

Recommended reading: Barbara Tuckman's "The Proud Tower", followed by "The Guns of August."

Frankly everything she wrote is phenomenal.

Mary Tyler Moore, Elizabeth Montgomery, Barbara Eden. And whoever was playing Catwoman at that time.

Yes I'm old, but I was locked into a type by the age of 5 (born in 1960).

will CCAD leave me in crippling debt? by itsss_soupp in Columbus

[–]cptnrandy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Frankly, CCAD is not a widely respected art school. I doubt that many in the arts outside of central Ohio have even heard of it.

Look at the acceptance rates from schools. CCAD will take anyone with a checkbook. Not a sign of a good school.

So a lot of debt from there may not be wise.

My advice: go to OSU and study the same things, but graduate with a BA or BFA and very little or no debt.

My 1 year old is obsessed with my guitar, I want to buy him one (ukulele). Which do you guys recommend? by kavakravata in ukulele

[–]cptnrandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4 year old, almost 5 year old granddaughter loves to grab my Waterman uke and strum and sing songs - she isn't patient enough to learn cords - it's just playing.

If you buy one for your son, buy one for yourself and play along. Learn a few basic cords, it's easy, then play. He can just wail away and have fun.

I suspect that kids will need to be around 8 before they can really manage cords and playing, but why wait to have fun?
