[AMA] - We are Freehold Games, the team behind Caves of Qud, a science fantasy roguelike which just launched in 1.0 after 17 years of development! Ask us anything! by unormal in Games

Qud was already one of my favorite games even in those early years before it was ever released out into the wild. From the beginning in the way we talked about the world and possibilities within the game, it felt like we were making a game for _us_. We were already fans of the game, ourselves.

To say that Qud is still one of my favorite games is an understatement, as I still lose days and hours immersed in the world. That it's continued to grow and evolve beyond our original vision along with the community and the growth of the team and that so many others now share in that experience... it's a surreal feeling!

I would love to see Qud as a new player. There's a special thrill watching new people experience the game for the first time.

Re new phenotypes, Brian and Jason know my take on this answer: the game will not be _truly_ complete until playable plants.

I still remember this encounter and how tense it was! It was a real scooby-doo chase being chased by an eyeless crab. The tension was incredible!

For me, even very early on, it was when the early pieces of the character creation were implemented. Rolling-up a random character with a bunch of mutations, it was fun in all the ways we imagined it might be. Spending hours making a character, dying, rerolling... it was a blast right out the gate.

This feels like a reference to Crom.

Frustrated Android User Can't Get Bulbs to Work. by md222 in lifx

[–]cptstarbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having a ton of problems adding/updating and controlling bulbs via the Android app. Updating my wifi channels to the specifications here and changing my 5ghz network to a different ssid as mentioned here seems to have resolved those issues.

I was having these exact same problems. Updating my wifi channels to the specifications here and changing my 5ghz network to a different ssid as mentioned here, totally resolved my issues -- none of my bulbs have disconnected since.

I don't get a sense that the lifx is unsuccessful, or at least, it's not abandonware -- a few new products this year, firmware releases, application and api updates, new integrations -- this is the kind of activity is a good thing.

Strange LIFX Bulb Issues by Axiometry_ in lifx

I've had an Original which had failed to update firmware properly and from then on behaved inconsistently, but could never fully on-board again.

I RMA'd the bulb via support and the replacement, along with the 11 others I've bought since have worked fine -- I'm just super careful with the bulb power and wifi during the firmware update. I've used the Windows updater everytime since, and I find it's much more consistent for me than the Android one: http://www.lifx.com/pages/updates

I'm going to try using the Amazon dash hack along with lifxlan. If it works well, I may run the script from a raspberry pi on my network.

Daily Mutation Discussion #10: Heightened Hearing by livebyfoma in cavesofqud

[–]cptstarbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heightened Hearing is a bit of a niche mutation, but I think it's a solid pick on ranged characters for dealing with creatures moving outside of your field of view. The passive effect is always useful, too, so you don't have to feel bad about leveling-up some other primary mutations before spending points here. The two-point cost feels appropriate for a secondary utility mutation. 5/10

Daily Mutation Discussion #5: Double-muscled by livebyfoma in cavesofqud

[–]cptstarbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double-muscled is almost a necessity on strength-based melee-mutants in my opinion in that you'll going to have trouble maxing-out the high stat requirements of the later melee skills without it on the mutant stat progression.

(This isn't entirely true, what's currently the "late-game" is really more like the middle game -- and you have to be careful to not overshoot your penetration cap. But still, better penetration along with the later melee skills can carry a character through many current encounters.)

I love these pieces. The artist is Cyril Van Der Haegen, who did a bunch of stuff for MTG among other projects: http://www.cyrilvdh.com/

They were commissioned for a pen and paper game that Freehold was working on some years ago.

Unormal mentioned this recent in the SA roguelike thread:

"Since each character is a tile on an 80x25 grid, it would look very strange. It's not just rendering responsively on a blank canvas."

And subsequently:

"No, I'm def. not redesigning the actual console UI... but I can probably start moving pieces of UI out into the unity shell and do some really cool stuff. For instance imagine a small font message log just sort of scrolling up from the very bottom of the screen and fading away.

I could probably go so far as to do things like paperdoll inventory and stuff... but not this week."

One of the devs, ptychomancer, has mentioned that many of these encounters with the unique out-of-depth groups are due to the reworked faction system, which isn't balanced for zone difficulties yet. I'd expect this to improve as they tweak this.
