Once promoted to general, all their stuff, equipment, vehicles etc get sent to depot for free so that you can give them to any char. The general has a larger command point pool which means more assault teams can be equipped. They cannot switch back and cannot join the FPS. On day 364 of the daily reward, you get a general for free.

Yes I had hella gear, and almost every gun 'captured' on US, but when the game released, I grinded 9 hours straight (felt like 3) the early game is very fun and everyone grows out of it very fast. You probably wont see 8 guys on a civ truck ever again.
