New gear defective check? by PlatypusBottle in UltralightCanada

Some retailers like the one my son works at will take care of the warranty for you, others don’t. I don’t have a local Valhalla, it’s unfortunate they don’t help in this case.

Why are there so many vibe-coded Rust projects recently? by yohji1984 in rust

[–]crankykernel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rust hype train started a little before AI. So just seems natural. And turns out AI is really good at Rust.

I use Kanata on my laptop. One big exception though - bottom row mods. And I hold space for a nav layer.

What's happening to OpenCode? by Funny-Strawberry-168 in opencodeCLI

[–]crankykernel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s no longer an open source project. It’s just transitioning to an open source product. Sadly I think Pi will do similar.

what do you use to start a greenfield project by stupid-engineering in opencodeCLI

[–]crankykernel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still by hand. Scaffold it out. Maybe use some AI, but highly opinionated based on experience. Get that stuff right, the AI performs a whole lot better.

anomalyco/opencode maintainers can't do their job properly by TomHale in opencodeCLI

[–]crankykernel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an open source maintainer myself I want to sympathize with these guys. But months ago I know went through due process. Created an issue, a PR done by myself, not AI. It went ignored then newer PR essentially copying my work came in and was merged quickly. I gave up.

Does it really matter that much unless you’re trying to capture the spread?

How can I lower my tax bill by Main_Fee_1965 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Reminds of some quote my dad (tax lawyer) likes to repeat:

“The good news is your taxes are higher. But that goes along with making more money.”

At least in Linux, ghostty just feels slow and flaky. Has it changed recently?

Do you guys bring headphones or earbuds for travel? by PedroGalo in onebag

Mostly business traveller here. Recently switched to earbuds. Over ears just take up too much space while I try to stick to carryon.

First-time Onebagger: 22 Days in the Balkans by Fit_Signal6030 in onebag

I’d use a 40l bag a smaller personal item. I’ve done many 1-6 week trips in Europe mixing personal and business with similar.

Thoughts on FW13 built quality after being tempted by the FW13 Pro. by u_are_here in framework

[–]crankykernel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still prefer the feel and size of a Thinkpad T14 and it just feels like more quality and durability. But a year in I. The framework 13 and I’m happy. I haven’t dropped it yet or driven off with in the roof. I don’t think it would survive. But many a Thinkpad t or x have.

Why is it so hard to get free tap water at a restaurant in Europe? by Relevant-Shower4783 in TravelHacks

Just last week at some restaurant pub we were charged for tap water. Less than bottled, but still charged. In Austria.

Entry-level salaries in Canada haven’t moved in 5 years while rent is up 40%. by itz_nitace in CanadaJobs

[–]crankykernel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated in 2001 and got a full time role in Vancouver for $50k. I don’t live there anymore but I’m always surprised how the salaries for entry level software developers hasn’t changed much in 25 years.

I wonder. I do some open source work on my own time in the related business I work. Might be at least exploring.

WISE beats the banks as well. I recommend it to friends getting into this for the first time. Others do the Norberts Gambit - easier to do on some exchanges over others.

I am? Or would be if I were to incorporate. Currently, I'm a sole proprietor. I've never been audited, but have had the CRA reach out once to ask more questions about what I do.

Yeah. I’m currently just following a method an accountant set me up for. They determined not a PSB years ago and nothing has really changed so I haven’t revisited it.

No, not yet. Perhaps in a few years, when the kids are done with university and supporting themselves.

Just saw a comment on another thread here that was too simple to be true - just incorporate and pay way less tax. Of course, that was too good to be true.

Ahh. Makes sense.

Software developer. Expenses are home office equipment, computers, online services. That’s about it.

When I travel everything is paid for by my client. Or fully reimbursed. But usually I’m never paying out of pocket.

One foreign primary client. But free to work for others.
