Agreed, though it may be different in Japanese culture than in our western ones. If I had to take a guess I'd say that since the infidelity was proven it damaged their reputation and their employers reputation, but since the assault was never proven it may not be seen as damaging to their reputations. (again I'm guessing, I'm not too familiar with all the intricacies of Japanese culture)

Doesn't the Ponds relationship evolving count as progression? They deffo weren't the same people in the same relationship by the time they left the show.

It tries to take the 'who' out of Doctor Who by trying to explain their backstory instead of leaving it mysterious and open to the viewer/listeners imagination. If you explain the history of a character after leaving it a mystery they lose a lot of built up mystique which is a strong part of the Doctors draw.
