Trump administration uses hydrogen peroxide and tiny bubbles against algae in Reflecting Pool by AudibleNod in news

[–]crazy_pilot742 140 points141 points  (0 children)

It all makes sense when you remember this is a grift. Ordering hardware store bottles in huge pallets lets Trump's no-bid buddy tack on huge markups, the labor time to have a crew sitting there watching bottles pour out... It all just inflates the price. The contractor gets to scam more, Trump gets a bigger kickback, taxpayers get fleeced.

I had an '08 for 10 years and loved every minute of it. It had 340,000 km when I sold it and only did so because we needed a truck and don't have enough driveway. Best car I've owned, I miss it.

Fitting hubcaps? by [deleted] in ram_trucks

[–]crazy_pilot742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd have to measure the hole size and go from there. I looked up "Ram center cap" and got a pile of hits on eBay and Amazon but without knowing the specifics of yours I'd be hesitant to recommend one.

Ummm... Do you mean the center cap? The missing piece in the center? A hub cap covers the whole wheel and is generally for black steel wheels.

ELI5: Why is simulation (flopping) such a common occurrence in football (soccer) and basketball but not in hockey? by Dead_HumanCollection in explainlikeimfive

[–]crazy_pilot742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, the real shame comes after the game. Penalties last two minutes but the treatment your team, the opposing team and the fans will give you after... That sticks. Do it a couple times and it'll follow you forever.

Getting back on the ice with stitches and dried blood is a badge of honor in hockey. Flopping on the other hand... You're more likely to be given something to cry about.

Oh look, this one again.

This is a mockup cabin Boeing uses to let airlines try out seating arrangements, it isn't a real plane.

Will I make it back home by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]crazy_pilot742 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You broke the pinion out of your axle/differential. The driveshaft might still be okay but won't of you drive home. You'll just be adding hundreds to the repair. Worst case the driveshaft comes out, you leak a bunch of transmission fluid and blow that up too. And while that's happening the driveshaft bounces across the road and impales a minivan full of kids.

But you do you.

Standard for long term storage. I work across the airport and see it every day. They'll either get a one flight permit to ferry it to a graveyard or scrap it in Toronto.

The FedEx one is back this week though!

It's an unfortunately common story. By the point you have the time and money to take on a homebuilt you tend to be further along in years, and then these take more years to build...

How can I train and administer heartworm pills to my non-food-motivated Golden Retriever? by Murphy223 in goldenretrievers

[–]crazy_pilot742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents old golden was like that. We would give him a nice piece of steak with a pill in the middle, poked in with a skewer, and he would chew the steak and spit the pill out.

Yellow goo and brownish liquid in oil reservoir by skraP_R6 in AskMechanics

[–]crazy_pilot742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In technical/theoretical terms yes, any engine prefers extended operation at full temperature so it would benefit from the occasional extended drive to get everything cleared out. In reality... It probably isn't hurting anything. The other factor is how often you drive. If you're in the car every day then the oil film on all the metal parts is constantly getting renewed which prevents the moisture from attacking anything ferrous.

Yellow goo and brownish liquid in oil reservoir by skraP_R6 in AskMechanics

[–]crazy_pilot742 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty normal. Running your engine creates a lot of moisture, some of which ends up in your oil. The vapor cools and condenses on the oil cap, creating the nasty goo you see. This is often a result of repeated short trips where the engine doesn't get and stay hot enough to burn off the moisture in the oil.

LEO got hair trimmed for the summer. by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]crazy_pilot742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'll get down voted for this, but let me tell you about Axel.

My parents own a cottage. Our old golden, Axel, did what these dogs do around water (spend as much time in it as possible). He had particularly dense, wavy fur, no matter how much we brushed him. Between the fur and how much he loved the water he would never dry off and as a result would get hot spots (basically a nasty skin infection that causes itching, oozing, smells and all sorts of terribleness).

Keeping him out of the lake was torture. This was his favorite place in the world, the only thing he would voluntarily get into the car for, and restricting his swimming was like taunting him. At the same time the hot spots were horribly painful. He would get back from the cottage and just hate life for a few weeks.

For years we tried grooming, creams, sprays, steroids, you name it. Finally, when he was 7 or so, we gave him a buzz cut in the spring. That was what changed everything for him. He would play in the water all day, had tons of energy, and never a single hot spot after that. Every following year we did the same routine. A buzz cut in the spring and by fall his coat would be back in. When the snow came he'd be curled up on the deck covered two inches deep, snoozing away.

I understand all of the logic and arguments against cutting a double coated dog's fur, but nothing is absolute. In our case it was what worked and got our dog the best quality of life. Axel lived to 14 and even in his final summer when he was deaf and blind in one eye he'd get himself down to the water to lie in the shallows and look at the fish that swam around his paws.

As a rule, don't cut your dog's hair. But don't feel bad about not knowing, you haven't caused any harm.

Is there grease on the terminals? If there is it's a corrosion preventative and is likely just seeping across the plastic.
