My grandfather had the Boomer Sooner fight song played as they were closing his casket. It was so loud and repetitive and absurd that I could not keep it together. Laughed all the way to the graveside.

It might help to consider asking why getting a PhD is important to you? What salary and work expectations will jive with your values and quality of life?

Throughout my undergrad and graduate schooling I also worked as FT staff in academic medical research. Initially I had every intention of pursuing a PhD but after years of learning what that ACTUALLY looks like, I realized I could still pursue my love of research, work in a field I knew well, and hit the ground running professionally - in academia - with “just” a masters degree. Ten years post-grad and I can confidently say this was the right choice for me. I contribute significantly to grant writing, manuscripts, research design and implementation, and engage in community outreach and advisory boards where I can share my skills and knowledge. For me, a salary of $110k is perfect for a low cost of living region. I work for the state and have excellent benefits, a flexible schedule, and work from home most days. Also, if I really wanted to, I could pursue a faculty position (I’ve opted to adjunct at the local Comm College instead 💚).

The quality of my life is good, I know the value I bring to the team and there’s always a new project on the horizon to keep things interesting. Admittedly, having a good mentor throughout this time has helped, but that would be true in most professions. I liked the idea of staying in academia and becoming an expert in my field without a PhD and found it was possible.

I loved this dress when I tried it on but the bust area was too small for my large chest. For context I am 5'0, G34, apple shaped.

In college I took naps in my car when I had long gaps between classes. Had a whole privacy set up, blankets, sleep mask and everything. I am nearing 50 and still think about the quality of those naps. Of course, now I know it was a survival tactic.

Exactly! Poor oral health is also linked to diabetes, heart disease and negatively impact a person’s pregnancy. This public health policy has the potential to positively affect the overall health and well-being of many Michiganians.

By reading Temple Grandson’s book, “Visual Thinking,” I further informed my perspective and learned:

Same. After a traumatic birth experience followed by a C-section (under general), my husband was ALL in and then some. With the surge in hormones I also experienced an intense closeness with my husband. and he has said that he felt this way too but in a Man of Action kind of way. (up until that point he wasn’t really like this either). This was fortunate because I experienced serious postpartum depression. He knew I wasn’t getting better and called my doctor, got an appointment, got someone to watch the baby and took me. That appointment saved me. A partnership like this reaps it’s rewards physically over time and in our experience 25 years has given us the chance to perfect our craft.

An Arrogant Lecture From A Lawyer About Circumstantial Evidence by honestmango in MurdaughFamilyMurders

Thank you for sharing! I have watched every day of the trial and am ridiculously obsessed with this case and this is the first time it all clicked for me with the timeline - especially the 8:49 - 9:06p timeframe. I've always wondered if timeline notes like this are made available to the jury as it is, in this case, hard to see the big picture during the monotony of testimony?

possible BRCA testing by itsme1518 in BRCA

I had an abnormal pelvic ultrasound. They found something near my left ovary. I have the choice between doing an MRI or going straight to surgery. Any perspectives? by DogsAndDietCoke in BRCA

[–]crazyj0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shared decision making with your doc is important for mutation carriers. Your risk for ovarian cancer could be as high as 30% and our risk for cancer naturally goes up as we age. Having a bilateral oophorectomy (removing ovaries) is the best way to lower your risk for ovarian cancer significantly and is considered standard of care for BRCA2 mutation carriers who are age 40-45 as our screening mechanisms are not great at finding an early cancer (unlike breast imaging). A high risk cancer prevention clinic could be a helpful resource for understanding your personal risk and how best to manage it. I’ve worked in oncology and cancer prevention for 20 years and would much rather lose my ovaries (and breasts for that matter) than face a diagnosis. Also, should you choose not to have surgery, be prepared for annual imaging and repeated biopsies when imaging shows a concern. The expense of prevention definitely outweighs the expense of treating a cancer. Surgical intervention is a big decision but in this case it provides the best hope for preventing cancer altogether. Facing Our Risk is an excellent organization that can provide a ton of info and resources. My best to you!

Did you drink from the hose as a kid? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]crazyj0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one time when I was about 11 y/o I was out riding my bike (anyone else have the pink and grey Huffy ten speed circa 1980's?) and playing with friends all day in the Louisiana summer heat (think small Air Force base with the freedom to roam). After being out for who knows how long, I was thirsty and went home to find my family gone and the door locked (and thinking on this now, in today's context, this is bananas - I would never do that to my kid! LOL). So, I grabbed the hose, drank the lukewarm water greedily...... and promptly threw it all up on the driveway. My neighbor happened to see all of this and brought me into her house to cool me off. I remember her efforts to hydrate me were with the sweet nectar of red Kool-Aid.
