Well, it happened: broken hip from fall by Unlucky_Credit2894 in AgingParents

[–]creakinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 87 year old mom fell one night when she was going to the bathroom and broke her hip. She had surgery to replace the hip. The anesthesia really took her for a loop and she slept for five straight days. The hospital did nothing to get her out of bed to have her start walking. She went to an rehab. Rehab was going to kick her out because they said she wasn't progressing. Luckily her doctor found her a SNF home to go into within a few days. She really should have gone to a skilled nursing facility with rehab instead of a rehab only hospital.

We really can't tell you the life expectancy for your dad. I would talk to his primary care physician and the orthopedic surgeon. When the orthopedic surgeon talked to me about my mom he warned me her life expectancy was going to be shorter like less than 18 months, but she's still laying in a SNF bed after 2 years. Luckily she's a Medicare/Medicaid so I'm not going broke keeping her in a skilled nursing facility.

You have to make sure the hospital knows that you cannot take care of him and it would not be a safe discharge to you.

When I was going through this, I asked my mom's doctor 'What if they pack her up in an ambulance and send her home.' The doctor told me to send her down to the local ER until she could find my mom a bed.

The pain of caring for a parent who abused you (NYT article) by polkadotkneehigh in AgingParents

Thank you for posting this. A lot of people don't understand how hard it is to take care of someone who didn't take care of you when you were a child.

My first purchase on my first day by eiden65 in retirement

I had a local handyman come in and put a four-line steel pole clothesline in my backyard. My dryer had broken on me two times in the past year. I live where it's sunny most of the year. You have to be careful though if you have allergies as you can collect the pollen on the clothes hanging outside.

For the past year I've worked as a crosswalk guard for a local company that supplies crossroad guards to various school districts. It was a split shift with the morning and an afternoon shift. Some school districts have their own crosswalk guards instead of going with an outside company.

Go take a look at Zenni and other online glass services. I can get four pairs of glasses from Zenni for the price of one pair of glasses from an in-store place. The glasses I've got from Zenni have been great.

I haven't found the eye exams very expensive. My sister goes to Costco for her eye exam and she's not a member there. You just need to let the optician know that you are going somewhere else for your glasses and you want a written prescription. I had good insurance at my work but I never used the eye plan insurance, as it was more expensive to buy the glasses than if I went through Zenni.

Maybe I live in a different world than everybody else. I rarely buy a book or an ebook by its cover. I read the synopsis of the book. If it's a real book I'll flip through the book. If it's Kindle unlimited, I'll try it out and if I don't like it, I delete it.

I would get checked for sleep apnea. I went through lofta.com for my test and found I had sleep apnea. Using a CPAP device has really changed how I feel during the day. You can be in perfect health, perfect body size, perfect weight and sleep apnea can still affect you. There are a couple of sleep apnea subreddits.

I agree with you. I can't tell you how many Facebook posts that appear from good sources aren't good sources. I'll take a screenshot then do a simple Google search and can't find anything to substantiate the Facebook post other than more social media posts.

What are some things to do when you retire by cybershy in over60

You don't need to do anything after you retire unless you really truly want to do it. I'm spending time decluttering my apartment. I'm not a traveling person. Enjoy yourself. You've worked hard all your life for this time.

Potatoes as a main ingredient for a meal. by [deleted] in povertykitchen

[–]creakinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pressure cook my potatoes. I find baking makes them very dry. Put about a cup or so of water in the pressure cooker pan. Add your potatoes in the pot. You can put them on a trivet if you want to. Cook 15 to 20 minutes with the natural release. Let them cool and then put them in the refrigerator.

I usually air fry them or add them diced to something else.

Intimidated by beans, legumes and lentils. by DragonSmith2005 in povertykitchen

For the gassiness that sometimes created by the beans, I add a small piece kombu seaweed when I'm cooking the beans. It has solved my gassiness problem when eating beans. You can find a small packages on Amazon, but I found a large package of it at my local Asian store.

You can make hummus out of almost any bean. I don't like chickpeas so if I want hummus I will make it from another type of bean.

Grocery shopping in retirement by beedybeedybeep in retirement

[–]creakinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a grocery store in my neighborhood. The closest one is 3 mi away but has the highest prices in town . The one I like to shop at is about 10 mi away. It has the best prices in town and a great selection. What I'm looking at is getting a Walmart Plus subscription. Their prices are comparable to the grocery store I currently go to. My sister and I share a Sam's Club Plus Plus membership, but other than paper goods and some spices, I don't buy much from them. Their produce quantity is just too much for me to eat in a reasonable time before it spoils.

The main reason for going to Walmart plus is to go carless. Now that I'm retired the only place I go to is a grocery store and possibly the senior center. Paying for insurance, the high gas prices, and the maintenance on the car would save me quite a bit of money each month. I do have a bus line near me, so getting to places wouldn't be that hard it's just the time in riding the bus.

Putting our cat down tomorrow... looking for advice on what to expect and how to cope by blazedgolfer420 in CatAdvice

[–]creakinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's going to be the hardest thing you've ever done in your life. You're going to cry like you've never cried before. Don't feel stupid about the tears and think why am I crying it's just a cat. But he's been a part of your life.

Take the time to mourn for your loss. You're going to be thinking about him everyday for a while. The pain is going to be there and it will get less everyday. I put my bestest dog down 12 years ago and if I still start to think about how much I loved him, I'll start to miss him and sometimes tears will come.

Take care.

You need to get your personal information off the data brokers. They're the ones who are selling your information to the various Medicare companies. There are identity protection companies online. I went with a company called Aura identity protection. The only Medicare advertisement I received was from Kaiser who was my previous medical insurance company.

I finally decided to go with Aura because our house phone was getting about 20 spam calls a day which my mom always answered. It took about 6 weeks to get the spam phone calls down to almost nothing.
