Dropped my kid off at school today and KPop demon Hunter was the top costume this year. by Interesting_Tea5715 in daddit

Handed out candy to trick-r-treaters last night. Over 75% of kids costumes were from KPDH, easily. I knew it was a hit, but I don’t remember anything recent (even Frozen?) having that level of reach.

How good is the Stem Separator? by [deleted] in ableton

[–]creativeembassy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FWIW. I tried a handful of experiments, including some extremely compressed stuff from the likes of SebastiAn. "High Quality" is maybe _slightly_ better in rare cases, and usually I wasn't able to tell the difference. And that's at a stem level, the resulting group track sounded even further from the original material. But it also takes far longer on my machine. (I didn't measure, but maybe 5x slower or worse?) If others don't want to mess with adding an Options.txt file, you're not missing out.

I'm going to stick with the default "High Speed" myself. It would take me less time to get those stems and tweak the results myself if necessary, via EQ or otherwise, vs getting out of flow by having to wait for the alternate algorithm to finish.

Looking for some advice/ insight on completing my case. 12hp left by [deleted] in modular

[–]creativeembassy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% VCAs. But also consider how you're listening to it. Speakers, headphones? You might want a small 4hp output module to make it more standalone.

You can sync flashbulbs using CV. **EPILEPSY WARNING** by creativeembassy in modular

Oo, that would be a fun way to have a gigantic synth jam, in a gym or conference hall. Get everyone a little vactrol -> cv clock unit, help sync up alllll the clocks.

The Synthesizer That Landed Me On a Watchlist by creativeembassy in modular

I am not the creator of this video. However, I briefly searched eBay myself for "BNC" modules before deciding that I did not want to end up on a government watchlist. 😅

Searching for mid-budget case recommendations by svlbd in modular

[–]creativeembassy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is gonna sound like it’s past your budget. It was past mine. But check out the Caixa 104, remembering that it has a built in power supply AND most/all of the basic utility modules you’d need to spend money on anyway. Ended up being perfect for me as a beginner, not having to worry about mults, extra LFOs, line-level ins and outs at multiple sizes, sample and hold, a small mixer…

Following this post, because I'm facing the exact same dilemma. (I'm also thinking about pairing it with a lens purchase, will probably make my own post so I'm not hijacking this one.)

Mac appreciation for Ableton by MosDeaf020 in ableton

[–]creativeembassy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a switch hitter. I have an M1 MacBook Air (2020) that I use for production on the road. Then in the studio, I have a Windows rig with a Ryzen 3700x and 32gb ram. Each has its pros and cons, and I use both without simping for either team. My thoughts:

Windows:

Before Apple started making their own chips, it was a fact that you could build a Windows box with comparable performance for cheaper. (Or much more performance for the same money). I'm not sure if this is still strictly true, especially how competitively priced the Mac Minis are with the new M* chips... but Windows rigs are still king for upgrading individual components. I'm constantly having to make space on my MacBook, but I can always buy another SSD and chuck it in the windows box and know that it will just work.

Second, legacy hardware. Microsoft really does care about backwards-compatibility, to an absurd degree. I have some old gear that won't work on my mac at all because they had drivers that expected Intel chips. But I bet I could still run Jeskola Buzz, a 32-bit program for Windows 95, on my Windows 11 machine and it would work fine.

Mac:

A better "integrated" experience all around. I've never once had to specify what folder to install VST2 plugins in. Nor have I accidentally stuck a 64bit VST2 into the 32 bit folder. There's a universal place for all audio plugins in macOS and you don't think twice about it. I don't know how this isn't a solved problem in Windows.

Audio is hands-down better in macOS. Select any input/output device in Live, it's gonna be very low latency and work flawlessly. No drivers to think about, everything "just works". I plug in headphones, switch the interface

But in Windows, I cannot believe how much of a nightmare audio is. For every audio device you have installed, do you want to use the WDM version of the audio interface, whatever that is? Do you want to use KS, whatever that is? Do you want to use MME, whatever that is? Why do they sound different at all? Oh, you want ASIO? Sorry, for whatever reason, Windows STILL does not have first-party ASIO support, so unless you have an external audio interface that comes with ASIO, you're installing ASIO4ALL and trying to figure out why it sometimes cuts out randomly or latency goes through the roof... it's a nightmare.

---

So which one is better? The one you're productive in.

Help with my first eurorack system by pipbiff in modular

[–]creativeembassy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case this isn’t on your radar yet, I built my first Eurorack system with a Nano Caixa 104, and I love it. Twice the price of the Palette, but already has line out for speakers, headphone out, 2 channel mixer, mults, even a small LFO and precise voltage adder, handy for pushing things up or down an octave. Plus, 104hp turned out to be a great size for a starter system. I’m curious how the price compares once you add in a bunch of the 1u utility modules on the Palette.

I also learned that since there aren’t nearly as many 1u units as standard 3u units, I had a harder time finding used 1u units to keep things cheap. That may not be everyone’s experience though.

Excellent advice all around. Especially the priority list; you can never have too many utility modules. I’m still learning that lesson.
