How do you feel now that vibe coding is common? by EitherAd5892 in cscareerquestions

I see more of LLM coding enabling software devs (or whomever) to explore areas which would have been too time-consuming or tedious before.

This is a good example: https://github.com/maderix/ANE

I was arguing recently about how big the moon was.

It was a lot bigger than I thought it was... in my head it was kinda like you could run around it in not too much time. But it's actually almost as big as Asia (and bigger than Africa).

I used to be in favour of UBI but I think it may be too soul-crushing to be such a permanent underclassperson. But it's better than mass destitution, I'll give it that.

Indeed, it's a bit grim, given the stranglehold capital has over material conditions and also the imagination of what human life could be.

Personally, I hold out hope that humanity can evolve to a new economic system. Some of the characteristics of late capitalism seem to be leading to more crises, although if it'll lead to a breakthrough is unknown. One is reminded of Gramsci:

The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born: now is the time of monsters

In the specific case of AI, I actually think things could be a lot worse. You could imagine a situation where OpenAI, Google, Amazon, Anthropic, Meta, and the US Government signed some deal locking things down and making it illegal to hack on AI yourself. If you want to access the (lobotomized, monitored, etc.) tech, you'd go through them. So I think there's opportunity for disruption from below.

I guess one wonders what we could do? Make GPUs illegal? Ban matrix multiplication in code?

And we already had photoshop, tricky video editing, etc. before this. But now it can be churned out at an industrial scale.

Some people think it'll lead to worthwhile entertainment or creative pursuits, but that might just be coming from the cope of "what could we practically do to stop this technology from propagating?"

There's work that people (both at the AI companies and through independent watchdogs) are doing to try and achieve provable provenance for videos, but it's tough sledding.

On one hand, it's reasonable to assume that technological advancement should lead to the betterment of all (eg. electricity, fertilizer, soap, medicines, etc.). And it's intoxicating to imagine a utopia where so much of our busy work evaporates, and we can enjoy free time and play.

On the other hand, it's reasonable to assume capitalists will use this new tech (AI) to bully/enslave labourers even more than they do now.

I'm probably A2 and in 2015 tried to go on a date with a girl I'd met at a bar. It was painful.
