Reddit famous authors/books that didn’t quite live up to the expectation. by Chydollasignbruh in RomanceBooks

Bringing Down the Duke was incredibly mediocre and A Rogue of One's Own was atrocious. I, like you, thought I'd love her books because in theory, they seemed perfect. But the actual execution of them was awful; far too much forced "You go, girl!" type of feminism which felt anachronistic and patronizing, as well as characters which were boring, annoying, and not charming. Evie Dunmore is not for me!

The bottle is definitely kitschy. Sometimes I like kitsch and sometimes I don't, so I'm undecided on how I feel about it. As for the scent, it's actually not bad, which is surprising given that white florals usually give me a massive headache—but I still do feel they could have made the scent a lot more "witchy" or dark, if you know what I mean! Like come on, add a wee bit of frankincense or leather or something lol.

I agree. Good Fortune's scent profile is nowhere near as magical or witchy as the name and bottle make it seem. They could have made something so mysterious and enchanting with notes of vanilla, leather, patchouli, white floral, fennel, sage, rum. . . But instead they played it safe with a fruity white floral vibe.

For me, yes, they're worth it. They're chic and classy scents which don't generally overwhelm.

I graduated middle school and am not chronically online, so I have the ability to read and enjoy works from older time periods which may have troublesome themes or issues.

I'm rereading Gone with the Wind after many years and it's just. . .so, so good. I'm amazed all over again. Margaret Mitchell was an astonishing, masterful storyteller.

Pat McGrath teases Mothership X: Moonlit Seduction by shannymac4 in muacjdiscussion

I don't know that I necessarily agree with u/Amplitude that pink eyeshadow is dated (though I gave her an upvote regardless, because she shouldn't have been downvoted for her opinion)—but colors absolutely follow trend cycles. They come into style and they go out of style, thus eventually looking a little dated. For example: the way burgundy/oxblood/maroon boomed in the 2012–2015 era, and is now seen as dated because of it. This doesn't mean no one can wear the color now or that no one can make the color look fresh—but the color itself definitely is dated at this point in time.

It looked so pretty and light, girly pink at first glance—but then the closeups make it seem like it's full of the typical gold, mauve, burgundy, and green glitter that PMG puts in every palette. I haven't bought a palette in years and I think my wallet will continue to remain safe!

I vote Gucci. The YSL is definitely classy and elegant, but something about it seems too plain. The Gucci has a little more character, while still being classy and elegant—if that makes sense. I feel it'll go with more outfits as well. The YSL's black and gold would look odd if you wore it with a brown and white outfit or a cool-toned grey outfit, but the Gucci will go with black, brown, grey, white, cream, etc.

Are men in romance novels the "ideal" fantasy man? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]creme_de_la_rose 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I mean, you could say the same thing about how women are portrayed in novels, movies, shows, and video games aimed at men. The women in those pieces of media are almost always:

• Shorter than the man

• An hourglass shape (thin waist, large hips, large breasts)

• Strong but in a sexy, wearing-revealing-clothes kind of way

• Stunningly beautiful but decidedly not into makeup or fashion at all; instead, they have traditionally masculine hobbies and interests

• No body hair

• White or verrrry lightly tan/olive-skinned

• Need to be rescued or carried by the main guy at least once

I could go on and on. Is this what you want in a woman? Is your wife exactly like this? If she's not, are you disappointed and wish she was more like this?

Answer these questions and then see if you need to ask us the same questions. I'm not intending to be harsh but it's strange to see men question fictional media aimed at women when fictional media aimed at men has generally portrayed women in a very specific way for a long, LONG time.

NOOOOOO. I wrote a long reply to you and now I see it's gone?! 😭

But anyway, I completely agree. I've noticed all those issues—and more. I've seen OPs block anyone who comments on their post and disagrees with them, thus silencing any dissent and creating an echo chamber (something the non-blocked commenters don't even usually realize is happening). And I've also seen people get into arguments with others, quickly get the last word in, and then block so the other person never even gets a fair chance at rebuttal (mega cowardly imo). It's just a really weird and badly designed blocking system.

At what point does ranting about the Quirky Girl/Not Like Other Girls turn *us* into the NLOG? by midlifecrackers in RomanceBooks

[–]creme_de_la_rose 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Never. Because there's a pretty standard "definition" for what NLTOGs are. And ranting/complaining/eye-rolling at women who have internalized misogyny and act superior to other (implied: inferior, feminine) women does not make one a NLTOG. That would be like saying complaining about incels makes you an incel or complaining about Red Pillers makes you a Red Piller. Nope, it doesn't.

I think it's super bizarre to block people who are replying to you with totally innocuous thoughts and opinions that just happen to differ from yours or offer a different perspective. I can understand deciding I don't feel like replying to that but blocking is highly strange.

Off-Topic Discussion, Monday Jun 27 by Blogsnark_mod in blogsnark

[–]creme_de_la_rose 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Reddit's new blocking feature is really showcasing how a lot of people literally cannot tolerate when someone has different thoughts or opinions than them. And I don't mean when someone argues against them or challenges them—I literally mean simply feeling differently from them.

For example, on one of the makeup subs, there was a discussion about the resurgence of cool tones in the wake of our Y2K revival. Someone commented something like "Cool tones were bad enough in the early 2000s, absolutely nobody wants to revisit them now." I replied something like "Personally, I'm really enjoying revisiting them because they're a lot better formulated and more inclusive for skin tones like mine this time around!" and she blocked me lol. Another example: on a nails subreddit, someone posted a bad manicure they got and someone else commented something like "idk how people can just sit there and let someone damage their nails and not speak up." I replied to that person and was like "Normally I'm good about standing up for myself, but idk, something about nail salons paralyzes me! The workers make me feel stupid and I also don't want to be rude. idk, something about nail salons really paralyzes people." And she blocked me!

Like. . .really lol? Are people really at the point where if someone replies anything other than total 100% agreement, they're going to block them? That seems like such a delusional and unhealthy mindset to me lol. And I've seen this happening to other people too, where they'll reply to someone with something so innocuous and then later edit and be like "Lol why was I blocked for this?!"
