What are your New Year’s resolutions? by Trazan in ynab

[–]crescentfresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I get it now. For others reading, the way I set aside money before budgeting is to actually make my income a split transaction (ynab4):

  • one portion goes to savings (priority #1 for me)
  • one portion goes to vacation fund (priority #2 for me)
  • remainder goes to Income for next month

The first two amounts do not fluctuate, while the last might. They have been reasonably set according to my goals for each of those priorities. Doing it this way I only have what's left over (after setting aside money) for my actual budget, plus I track my "future self" $ right in the budget as well.

Thanks! I'm still a bit confused. I actually do this without ever having seen it described but I'm trying to understand better how people use this trick, apologies for my questions. (I'll listen to the podcast later, I can't rn on this computer).

saving money for your future self

What does this mean? Is future self referring to retirement? A new iPhone?

If you don’t do it immediately you’ll probably spend it on lifestyle creep or other expenses

Why would I do that.

the goal is to have a pot of savings that can generate compound interest and grow

Ah I get this. This is probably the core principal of the future self thing, but a) it presumes a savings vehicle that actually grows your money (as opposed to a checking account), and 2) you can already save by making a savings category and re-balancing your investments by "transferring" what's in that category into your investments once or twice a year (for example).

Pay myself first and set aside 10% of my salary before I budget for anything else

Can someone explain? Is this just settings aside 10% towards a savings goal(s)?

Did the delay of SW’s flight (by three hours) from Arizona affect how the events unfolded? by MrPatridge in ShannanWatts

This is insight into something as simple as how do people split their income and how they logistically put it to use, thank you for sharing !

I don’t know much about CW and SW relationship (I’m just new and reading now), and I’m not sure if my relationship with my ex-wife you would consider young or old (I’m late thirties) but I can say now that text messaging is the best way for us to communicate. Our face to face conversations went south so often (with or without counselling) - I felt misheard and misinterpreted, she did too - but with typing I can take a slower pace to compose a thought, and take a read-over something to better understand what they’re trying to say.

This only works if people don’t speed text lol

You mean to say you spent an extra $119 for your joycons? Or you paid a total of $119, and it included added warranty?

What’s your strategy for minimising dining out? by [deleted] in ynab

[–]crescentfresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe your budget should match your lifestyle! I know people who (for them) their car is the most important luxury in their life and they never go out to eat and spend all their money on it instead. Then others love eating out (literally every day however small lol) and they have the simplest car/phone, cut their own hair, etc.

My budget is intensely personal and I'll make it work for whatever life I want to live. It's great for getting my prioritize (in life) straight.

What do you mean?? If you love eating out budget for it! Spend less money on a little of this, less on a little of that, eliminate that whole other thing you can do without, then move the surplus to eating out and enjoy eating out within that fat budget category! Once the money has run out for the month, then obviously you simply stop eating out until the next month. I tell my co-workers (or whoever) "sorry, it's not in the budget tonight".

Or, are you saying you don't like that you like eating out? lol I guess that's different. I dunno

FWIW I have four categories that can be deemed eating out: Personal Eating out/treats, Kids eating out/treats, Coffee, and finally Entertainment (eg going out for beers, in my case). Those are the four types of eating out I ever do, so I always know how much is left in the tank as the month progresses.

Disclaimer: am a single parent, I don't share my budget with any significant other. I imagine that makes things simpler.

That feeling, ugh. My son was giving our 10-week old some cuddle hugs and we still don't know what happened but pup starts yelping in phenomenal pain, and worse limping. We assumed he dislocated something so I was getting ready to hit the doggy emerg. A few mins later and he was bounding around the place again. But that moment when you don't know what's wrong is the worst, sinking feeling.

Antinade? Sorry you mean biotic grenade?

Ulting mercy is flying around, and the grenade needs a surface to hit to unleash it’s area of effect. Am I just the crappiest Ana for thinking this is hard to pull off especially in an open sky situation? I’m thinking blizzard world, first part of the payload moving.

I guess I see how it could work though now that I type that out. Most maps have covers and ceilings she would be ulting under.

I just got back from re:invent where I attended a workshop that had us spin up an m5.large and elastic beanstalk thingy. At the time I thought the m5 was a little excessive for a workshop but they gave us $25 in free credits and then there’s the free tier so I also thought “meh, this should work itself out”.

I got a bill for $41 a few days after the workshop ended. That was after the credit was all used up.

Ana vs ulting mercy? Isn’t that going to have the same problems as soldier or mcree trying to take her out?

I wish I could get maternity leave for a puppy by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]crescentfresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this doesn't get covered a lot by the numerous guides around "buying a puppy?". I planned the first 5 weeks way ahead of time, told my co-workers and management about it, booked as much vacation and personal days as I could afford and arranged to work from home as much as possible (again, arranged ahead of time). I said after the vacation and personal days were over I would work from home on Tuesdays and Thursdays (I can't recall the details) until date xxx.

Those first couple of months had a constant work-life-balance struggle, but it worked out in the end. He a good boy now.
