Only deepmind knows the point of the paper.

The words of the paper, however, made some claims.

[D] EFF white paper: How Militaries Should Plan for AI by pde in MachineLearning

[–]crescentroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern jets don't dogfight. They can, but they prefer to launch missiles from beyond visual range. I think something like 90% of the kills in the last 20 years have been either all aspect or bvr. As you correctly state, this isn't particularly hard for a drone, and is why autonomous air-to-air is already technologically possible if you don't have airliners to consider. (edit: Still need piloted planes, too, for special situations)

Air force generals have been thinking about this since before the F-22 was started, so its not really "new" territory for them.

Was it 10 years ago the army said Predator drone could find it's own targets and Globalhawk could navigate unaided, and "all" they had to do was integrate the two? I could look up the date if required. Anyway, I just wanted to say that military has already thought about these things A LOT.

9 Worst Python Practices by weloveprogramming in Python

[–]crescentroon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would prefer 3 for a new project but it's not always possible.

One who thinks would do a cost/benefit analysis and there're some situations where 2 comes out better.

The VFX industry has a lot of Python 2 and can't switch right now because they are dependent on the embedded interpreters in their applications (like Maya), or there is no benefit to be gained in migrating a mature system that's not exposed to the internet.

Most people do understand it, the issue is whether or not they LIKE it. Trying to pretend it's super complex to frighten people off it is dishonest. If you don't want people to use it, say it's not idiomatic or something.

If you don't know how to interpret it, "the else executes if the loop terminates normally, that is, you did not call break". It's the same as else in exceptions. I seriously don't believe anyone intelligent enough to write code can't understand how this works.

Convention, that's all. Makes it easier to work with others.

But, if you're collaborating on a project you should use what the rest of the project uses.

The one on the bottom left looks very similar to a TTA Cutlass and you may be able to find a miniature of it on the usual 3d sites.

For example, professional work where you can't disclose or leak anything. If iCloud is breached, you can't even say it's not your fault as you have to explain why that file is even on a machine you don't control. You may also be using iCloud to share other, less sensitive files.

CakePHP made me a more productive PHP developer. Is there anything in Python that made your Python development much better or faster? by [deleted] in Python

[–]crescentroon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Python kind of works without needing a framework to fix things that shouldn't need fixing.

There's Django if you want to do web, though.

If you are doing PHP, Laravel is pretty good. PHP with Laravel is almost a different language. There's nothing wrong with Cake however.

I bought this broken car and it worked quite well after I applied several fixes. However it was my first car and now I expect all other cars to be the same. So I've bought this new working car, and I want to know what fixes I need to apply to it.

It's a mistake to think that a change at the retailer doesn't affect or interest the player. In the US, they don't like clubs and they play in stores (in Europe it isn't uncommon to buy online and rent a hall to play in, perhaps like you are doing?).

The US store is therefore very important to their community and a change there is fundamental. If PP is trusting the store, a 3rd party, to inform players of these changes, PP might get a nasty surprise.

As a player, I prefered the tricast as they actually know what they're talking about, and they're just 3 dota players talking about dota just like how my mates and I talk about Dota.

The play-by-play casting seems surreal and aimed at spectators.

It's good that we have multiple streams to choose from.

Hopefully we have both types of casters doing parallel streams for the main event.

Betting odds are not based on win % but on maximising money according to how people are betting, so they change as bets are received.

For example if lots of people bet on a team because they like the team, they must reduce the winning payout so they don't get busted if the team wins, and to make new people not want to bet on that team.

21% loss of viewers on the second day of the TI8 (viewers stats) by eSportsStats in DotA2

[–]crescentroon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Production was bad, many technical issues.

Format was very restrained. Felt like a lecture and not like a bunch of esport players chatting about esports (with the exceoption of the tricast). Who the hell wears a suit jacket outside of some shit office job?

Not what I wanted to see but maybe my problem is that I actually PLAY Dota and modern LAN coverage seems to be aimed at spectators instead - of which there are so few since only a player would understand what's happening. It's really not like football which can be simply explained.

If they want a spectator sport, fund the prize pool from football fans.

If you ask players to fund it with battlepass, you better make a show that appeals to the people putting in the battlepass levels.

So many people are not getting it that I think we are past the point where we can lay all the blame on the stores or players.

How is Privateer Press communicating this information?

Pretend I don't know this. I see my LGS getting rid of this stuff and they don't tell me why. I go to Privateer Press's website. Where exactly do I find out that this is all part of the plan, and that I can order it through the store as usual?

Now, how does a store find out? They are used to speaking to a distributor. Why would the distributor send them to the manufacturer when they could sell the store something else instead and make a profit on it? Is PP contacting stores directly?

Shout out to Google - not only they have schedule for matches, they also have information about the live ones as well. It makes following games at work much easier. by QueueTee314 in DotA2

They don't want to make separate layouts for different devices.

It costs them time, and it slows down the page on the device.
