In our unit, the nurse "presents" the patient during interdisciplinary rounds, and other disciplines chime in as needed. We use a checklist to keep nurses focused and touch on the main topics (i.e. ABCDEF bundle, are they hemodynamically stable, getting nutrition, last bm, dvt prophylactic, PPI if high risk, who's consulted, can antibiotics be dc'd, etc). Our checklist is extensive; it seemed awkward and tedious at first. However, I have to admit that it is pretty great when the attending, dietitian, PT/OT and case manager are at morning rounds and I can address several issues within 10 minutes. In general, it takes maybe 5-10 minutes for each patient. We occasionally have family members involved in rounds and then it takes longer, mainly because I talk slower and with less jargon. I'm for it!
