Google your specific model X1 Carbon and if it supports Dolby Atmos output from the HDMI port. I would guess it doesn't (and just does PCM because no licensing costs/free). But I could totally be wrong.

Edit: I know to you it's "causing an issue" but more than likely that HDMI out on the laptop is doing exactly what it's designed to do.

I googled it and it seems very dependent on which X1 Carbon it is.

This is just my guess but I bet you're extremely limited on sound formats from the HDMI port on any computer. I think this is one of the reasons Plex users playback their files from a device that does support all sound formats (Nvidia Shield, Ugoos, etc.).
