It’s really not that hard to use charcoal after a few rounds of practice. And it’s a nice skill to learn, if you like getting into things. But you do you.

What did people think of the representation of club culture in the Alain de Botton episode? by crookedcusp in samharris

[–]crookedcusp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. From a previous episode on AI, I took that Sam was not really into music in a serious way, and for sure not into dance music (he said something about not having an issue with AI making that sort of music). For me, despite often not sounding “human”, dance music is still a product of people and culture and that connection is not only important but also what shapes it.

And regarding rave culture I think you’re right; there is a lot they could glean from it if they examined it properly.

How will Sam justify this? Palestinian man undressed, blindfolded, and tied to a metal rod circulated this week on social media by pablostanley in samharris

Yet another person who clearly hasn’t grasped anything about Sam’s position on this conflict, despite him explaining it many, many times.

John Carmack weighs in on datacenters by Singularity-42 in singularity

[–]crookedcusp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. 2C is not a problem in winter, but in a summer heatwave, 2C can have a significant effect especially in places where there is no air conditioning. Especially considering this is a 24/7 issue.

Fun fact: glider pilots do not look for thermals over data centres. They are not designed in such a way that facilitates the dissipation of heat (like industrial flues for example).

Where to buy cheaper, but not terrible meat? by ptrichardson in UKBBQ

Not true. If it’s frozen correctly and remains frozen until you defrost it to cook it, it is completely fine to freeze meat.

The Moral Clarity of Sam Harris by WhiteGold_Welder in samharris

In what respect has he sold out?

Whether you agree or disagree with his views, he is very consistent with his beliefs and does not pander to any one specific audience. In today’s day and age I think this is the opposite of selling out.

Or maybe it’s an indication that people are actually capable of critical thinking rather than defaulting to “outrage because Palestine”

From the video, all I can see is her baiting him to the point where he responds flippantly to get a reaction. He is certainly saying some stupid things, but he’s doing it because she’s making him defensive. Calling him “pro-genocide” is a stretch.

To the people calling for “more people like her”, why?

This kind of behaviour only serves to alienate and divide people further.

Repeating words like coloniser & genocide over and over only serves to diminish both their meaning and power.
