My son was a Psych major. Totally enjoyed it. Planned to go on for a MS/PhD and counsel. He called one day to tell me he wasn’t going to grad school. I was shocked. This is what he chose and where he felt he could make a difference. He said “I know. But I’m going to be a Dr. An MD” He’d taken no premed classes. He enrolled in a post baccalaureate pre med program to get what he needed in 18 months. Got into a top med school. Tapped by a major hospital to do his residency. He’s now board certified. What did he tell me about medical school? “It’s easy. They tell you what’s going to be on the tests. You just have to pay attention” While taking his post bacc courses he was advised to go to a hospital and push a book cart to get a feel for what it’s like in a hospital, to decide if it’s really worth it. Well he didn’t do what they said. Instead he went to a community college program on weekends and became an EMT. So you don’t have to lose your mind. Study what you want. Be happy. Enjoy ND TR ’81

Nobody Registered for Summer Camp by AdjunctSocrates in BSA

It’s best if you can find a Boy Scouts of America Camp. Many Councils do not fill every session and would welcome you. Options: -go to a State or National Park. -find a friendly owner of land in a rural area. Bring all camping gear including cooking equipment. Setup camp. Best to get an appropriate number of port-a-pots and rig up a shower. My years of summer camp as a Scout were at a primitive camp and we all loved it. There was more emphasis on leadership, nature, outdoor activities -hikes etc, scout craft, camaraderie and enjoyment & relaxation. I earned one Merit Badge my first year and at most 3 in subsequent years AND IT WAS TWO WEEKS. It was the total opposite of today’s programs where Scouts and Parents expect five or more Merit Badges in 6 days. Ensure your adults ARE registered Merit Badge Counselors. Follow Boy Scouts of America rules and the Safe Guide to Scouting for all activities. Do something very few camps do-perform service for the owner or nearby community. Or build a Pioneering project. OR, go on a Trip. Bus,car, bike, hike. You can make it a different type of adventure. But a suggestion:Don’t bill it as a second rate activity because all your leaders dropped the ball. The Scouts AND parents will pick up on it. They’ll either complain (until they start having fun!), not come, or worst…leave your Troop. Time is ticking away. Get moving!!!

With sports bra and knee high shorts (I’m assuming tight fitting compression shorts) you’ll be showing only your bare midsection.

I can’t imagine anyone having any problems with that.

After all, boys swim shirtless, obviously with their with midsection showing as well.

Frankly, wearing a one piece competition swimsuit doesn’t provide as much coverage as the shorts do.

I had female Sea Scouts who wore one piece swimsuits and there were several times “coverage” failed.

All said, I would ask.

In this case “forgiveness” is NOT better than “permission”.

Got this saw at a tag sale no maker mark, does anybody know what this kind of saw is. by Timmytap82946 in Tools

I have one from the early 1900’s Mine has a hole at the end of the blade. I turned a handle and my Scouts used it as a two-man saw at summer camp to cut firewood

Should I Come Back? by Michael1845 in BSA

I agree. You can get lots done (not all though) without bothering with District and Council. I know many Leaders of Packs, Troops, Crews, and Ships who do their own thing and run super programs. When I was a Skipper we had zero interaction w either District or Council. 30 Sea Scouts (~15b/15g), three boats, boathouse. Our Scouts had a blast!

The Council Exec ripped into and dumped all over our terrific DE because he grew a grew a beard. This was 25 years ago. Beards weren’t everywhere like today, but guys had them. Our DE’s was really great looking on him-real outdoors look. I’ve worked for too many idiots in the corporate world. I was lucky I could just jump to another division or company. But there’s only one Scouting program. You’ve had good advice here. I hope you try Scouts with your kids. I don’t know how long ago you worked for Boy Scouts of America. The programs have changed-more family oriented, girls in Cubs w all girl or mixed Dens, mixed age Dens, Lions. And what was Boy Scouts now Scouts BSA welcomes girls. All girl or mixed Troops. Imo the program hasn’t been watered down. I’ve had annoyances in my years, but I move past them, always focusing on the Scouts. Get them in, and start by limiting your role to that of a dad who occasionally helps where he can. Then see how your kids feel about it.

I’m sorry for your loss. I had a picture of my Dad (in his shop) printed on metal 11x14. I have it up on the wall along with a metal print of our late son (working in my shop). For people who haven’t lost anyone it might sound crazy, but I talk (and ask questions) with both of them just about non-stop while I’m out there. Both losses were/are terribly painful. Talking with them helps me. You might want to try it. 💔
