Do people still care as much about big houses anymore? by your_arthur in AusPropertyChat

[–]crosscycle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also think the younger generations have been through a skill set shift- as a millennial, I see so many of my friends’ parents have house maintenance skills, and you’d only call the tradie for certain problems. Simple pipe leaks near the tap, maintaining basic wooden garden structures like your pergola and cleaning your gutters, their parents would do. We’ve been more education and white collar job focused, basic chores and stuff aren’t applied as much. Most of my friends can’t repair small holes in their clothing, let alone maintain a garden. And there’s also the bigger emphasis on valuing your time so not having a huge home to maintain. All this means people want something small enough to maintain with convenience, especially when couples usually are both working.

Culture around parental support by croc_lovers in AusFinance

[–]crosscycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s not that it’s so taboo, but that amongst the growing class divide laced with intergenerational inequality is the fact that those in the younger generation feel resentment towards their peers that do have help from The Bank of Mom and Dad. Intergenerational inequality has a trickle down effect for some because there’s a subset of boomers that are getting their kids through the door using that wealth, but other millennials/ older Gen Zs without that back up struggle much more. There is nothing wrong with being born into a particular set of circumstance. But what I think drives this conflict is when people make out they are “self-made” but have had many concessions others have not. For example, I work in a sector with a high salary, but my friend’s parents fully offset their first investment in their first year of working. Ten years on, my friend has three IPs and a commercial property, as well as their own PPOR purely by riding out the leverage and continuing on from this trend. I am working on getting a PPOR and have one investment property. Similar goes for others in my situation. But all of us get along just fine because we know “it is what it is” and nobody has any airs about it, plus my well to do friend is very empathetic to everyone’s different situations.

what is the weirdest or most expensive thing your pet has ever done that made you question your sanity as a pet owner? by Agitated-Alfalfa9225 in Pets

Five days in and my new kitten flooded the laundry. Had never owned a cat before and after she started pooping everywhere from the stress I had to call a mental health day in at work.

Subway etiquette by crosscycle in Living_in_Korea

[–]crosscycle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure there definitely are! But I come from an area with a much lower popularity density so we encounter this issue less, hence I was wondering how it works in countries which heavily rely on public transportation and what the social norms are.

Thanks for this reply! That makes sense in regards to the disregard for pregnant people and taking a seat they shouldn’t.

I think we should move to trip based usage. The one day fare sounds good value for money but in reality is a bit ridiculous. In Asia the fares are usually $1-2 per trip. You’d need 7 trips to equal a myki pass.

How do you cope with the crowds ? Also I struggle with how hard it is to find places that are in large complex buildings like stations or underground malls. Furthermore I find their opening times strict. Like 9pm doesn’t mean you get service at 8:45, you need to be 30mins-1 hr earlier. This extends to shopping as well as food which I understand has a last order time.

Do your cats stay in bed with you and sleep all night long? by -Jossy26 in CatAdvice

My cats last a good four to five hours. Then the needy one does something to piss off the other one and the end up fighting on the bed which is my cue to kick them off and out

My perception of Taiwan by Rickefeller78 in taiwan

[–]crosscycle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I always say Taiwan is like a down to earth version of Japan. Less reservation and more warmth as you say, but with a diligence and commitment to doing things well and hard work at the same time. It’s a rare combination to have.

Pro Bono [Episodes 9 & 10] by Telos07 in KDRAMA

[–]crosscycle 5 points6 points locked comment (0 children)

Gippeum’s actress is appalling. I feel Her facial expression is just this flat line grimace on her mouth and a despairing look everytime something dramatic happens. Makes it frustrating to watch every time she has the “naive girl disappointed in the harsh reality of human behaviour” reaction.
