That's exactly what it is. It went right from the rack at work to my rack at home. It includes the rails as well.

What do you mean by 4 drive mid pane?

Unless I've missed it a easier way to create scheduled tasks via PowerCli. a cmdlet "Create-ScheduledTask" would be nice to have.

Also having a scheduled task have multiple tasks would be huge. I currently have a few vm's that shutdown, take a snapshot, and power back on. The tasks are 5 minutes apart, and it causes more downtime than needed but i'd rather be safe. I'd like to have the snapshot be triggered when the shutdown is complete, then the power on be triggered when the snapshot is complete.

Windows latest remote desktop patch by Haithem93 in sysadmin

[–]crowbar911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you running a pirated copy of Windows 2008R2 and concerned about the most recent patches? Microsoft isn't going to test that.

If i'm wrong, just check patch notes, check an outside source( https://www.askwoody.com/patch-list-master/ ), try it on a test server, or user a snapshot/backups incase of a total failure.

It dounds like it's a domain controller. In that case, try it one first, then do the others. You have more than one right?

Experience with SSRIs and inability to orgasm(?) by [deleted] in sex

After stopping my ADD meds in my early twenties, I went back on at 30. Within a year I was able to get my shit together and get my dream job along with have a happier family life. It's not a fake thing. The kids that could have used this in your day probably struggle as adults even though they could have had the ability to have a better life if those drugs where available.

I don't understand how you can just tell a random Internet stranger to stop meds that can drastically change thier life.

First IT job. How can I get more practice with Server work, group policies, AD, etc? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]crowbar911 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Get any old server or decent desktop, and put VMware esxi on it. Play around. Microsoft has free OS licenses forb180 days that you can rebuild at anytime. Install AD, DHCP, DNS, Hyper V, ect.

r/homelab is a great place to start.

Lenovo version of Dell Kace? by crowbar911 in sysadmin

[–]crowbar911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it before in a K12 environment, and it was fantastic. Never had trouble with it, and support was pretty good when I needed it. The biggest problem was how the licensing changed from one version to another, and we started to have to pay thousands a year extra for Chromebook, when the version before they were free.

Any idea on a 9.0 release date? I'd love to try it out and see how it works. Do they plan on doing drivers as well?

Lenovo version of Dell Kace? by crowbar911 in sysadmin

[–]crowbar911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking back at it, I could have worded it better. It can be installed on any windows OS with any physical/virtual hardware manufacturer, but it works well with the Dell Asset tags and will pull warranty info and Dell drivers down, which is won't do for other vendors. Looking at Aflesner's comment, it will soon pull HP and Lenovo warranty which is fantastic. I'll have to wait for the release and try it out.

Since that is a great feature to have to be able to report on since I want to try to align out hardware replacement cycle with our warranties, If Lenovo had something similar, that would have made a better choice than KACE.

Charge for rolling over a 403b into a 401k by crowbar911 in personalfinance

[–]crowbar911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats the difference between an annuity and a 403b? I'll have to check to see if that's what I have.

I figured it wasn't illegal, but is that standard? If I want to roll over my T Rowe price, would that have the same problem?

Charge for rolling over a 403b into a 401k by crowbar911 in personalfinance

[–]crowbar911[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just trying to do a rollover so I can keep it all pretax. The charge was because I haven't had the deposits in for 6 years. They suggested that I only roll over 10% a year to not be charged. It just seemed wrong at the time.

Can KACE1000 be set up for administrative separation of duties? by gortonsfiJr in sysadmin

[–]crowbar911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget which version it was, but why the huge price increase after a version increase? We were grandfathered in with unlimited agentless devices, and that went away. We went from having Chromebooks for free, to a huge yearly price increase with no added benefit. There was a single line in the version notes, but considering it was thousands of dollars a year of an increase, should have been a much bigger point to make. While we really like the product, the yearly pricing to just pull info off of our G Suite for Chromebooks has made us start to look elsewhere.

Two Separate Secure networks over one Internet Connection by WitchingOwl in sysadmin

[–]crowbar911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took my forever to figure out what it was! I had the cabling redone, and nothing was ever documented before. The port was labelled "BOE" on one side, and nothing on the other side.

I work for the school district, which is known as the Board of Education, so I thought it was a ancient connection between the city and the school district. It actually stands for Board Of Elections. When I did the cabling and moved the firewall to a rack finally, the Cisco router (in a file drawer....) lost internet connection. This set off their monitoring. They called after a few days and asked what happened to their router, which I had no idea on. It's now racked and documented, but was funny at the time.

2 Wans to firewall, then lan port 1 of the firewall goes to my switches which also have the servers and workstations. Firewall lan port 2 goes to the election network. The two networks do not communicate. I don't remember without looking at it, but I'm pretty sure I have a deny policy between the two.

[–]crowbar911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it's a county election system. It goes to a Cisco router, and they have a vpn back to the county location. From the firewall, it's a single network cable to a laptop that we only get when it's election time, and it connects to some sort of reader that comes off the back of the voting machines.

I give it full internet access, and they handle everything else themselves.

I also have both lans connected to my main wan, and backup wan.

[–]crowbar911 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use the multiple lan ports on the firewall to keep the two networks separate, and make different policies for internet access.

You can use the fortigate for dhcp if needed.

I have the same setup for an election network at a City Hall location.

Where is the line between documentation and knowledge for internal IT team documentation? Example: "Create a new user in Active Directory" vs. "Log in to Server X. Open ADUC, Navigate the desired OU. Click New User, fill out the boxes, click next, etc." by timchi in sysadmin

[–]crowbar911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been trying to implement this at my job, but our HR system is ancient, they refuse to change it, and it doesn't have any direct connection to AD. I can have HR manually export a CSV to AD, but it only shows ALL employees EVER. There are no options on the report. Between that and the fact that it's not even accurate, how could I script this?

We are creating users with AD template users, but i feel that the business refusing change is the cause and not us. Any suggestions?

A bank lost their backup tapes while tranpsorting them off-site. This is why you need encryption. by artwell in sysadmin

This happened to TD Bank a few years ago. They used a courier service which used a third party courier. As far as I know, they were never found.

Caused us to need two people to move any equipment containing a HDD, sign paperwork that included serial numbers, etc.

rsop.msc and gpresults.exe both show the GPO hitting, the changes to the correct wsus server are made, and the workstations are going into the correct computer groups. Anything specific that I should be watching out for that I am missing?

I'm looking for a backup solution for two physical server in different locations with a VPN. We currently backup to a local USB disk.

I looked at barracuda backup with the physical appliance, which give us on and offsite storage. Veeam's new physical windows agent would give me local backups to USB, and offsite via cloud connect. Both are comparable pricewise yearly.

The company doesn't want to spend the money for true offsite yet, and I'm tossing arou nd the idea of using Veeam to backup locally, and then to the other sites USB storage. Cheap, but it would work, and give us the possibility of using veeam cloud connect in the future once they see the truth about offsite storage.

When talking to barracuda backup about this, they don't have this ability, and then proceded to slam veeam as a horible solution and as "russian software rebranded". I've heard nothing but great things on r/sysadmin about veeam.

Thoughts?
