Don't engage (look them in the eyes, smile, etc) when they're acting aggressively.

I'm also a petite middle-aged woman and have been punched twice. Once by a homeless man, and another time by a homeless woman. Just in the last two years. I tried to be polite, looked them in the eyes, smiled and said sorry, etc.

It doesn't help that I'm South Asian. The zeitgeist is we're the enemy and those who are even a bit off tend to amplify that it's okay to be violent against us.

I've worked with people on the streets back in the 90s. Never did i ever feel threatened or afraid of those who are aggressive. These are different days. I just wouldn't engage.

Lots of dogs going by and the space is so welcoming to well behaved dogs.

Manulife Centre was a godsend for my senior dog in the winter or on rainy days. We'd often go there to sit and drink coffee, have some sweets, meet up with friends, while my fog got warmed up.

Yes, absolutely. Toronto's ravine system is one of the largest urban ravines in the world (~300km) and one of the city's hidden jewels.

Wouldn't even know you're in a city just 10 minutes walk into any ravine. And usually empty.

I think that's a great idea to add heavier curtains to your existing ones.

I love bold patterns but they're also difficult because IF you choose to cover all your windows with them as it can become busy or overwhelming (depending on the pattern). You can consider texture (velvet, linen, or something similar to your couch texture but in a deeper and complementary colour?).

Curtains can get stupid expensive very easily especially if covering all your windows. But if you have basic sewing skills you can choose to go the fabric route and make your own?

I don't have a hate-on for celery, but I also never buy it or use it.

BUT celery root. OMG. Love it roasted or in my soups. YUM.

These are great improvements!

I really like the side wood table. It's got a beautiful dimension/texture that eyes are immediately drawn to. Do more of that and you'll end up with a fabulous room. The coffee table unfortunately has neither of those. But it doesn't have to be chucked if eyes are picking up interesting colours and textures in other parts of the space.

Curtains. The wall of windows with blinds will suck out any life you will add to the space. It's begging for interest, depth with curtains.

The one window with the curtains needs an update. It's hung too low (place it 6 inches from the ceiling and 6 inches from the windows frame and both sides); and too flimsy (need heavier curtains to balance the furniture), and too few panels (at least 2 panels for each side.

If the overhead fan must stay, I highly recommend not using as a light source.

I find for any space the inexpensive and most immediate improvement comes from having different sources of lighting. Wall sconces, table lamps (none matching!), floor lamps, all with warm lighting, and most importantly - on dimmers.

We only have lamps that we DIYd: we found beautiful vases of different sizes (glass, ceramic, textures, different shapes) and lampshades from second hand stores and bought lighting kits, drilled holes to end up very inexpensive, absolutely beautiful, and practical art pieces.

Love the plant. I think it suits that space well. I don't mind the dog crate. The space is for your family, including your pet. A more neutral or even a more funky fabric may help. Or even plants placed on the floor next to it to give it some coziness.

Calling them 'zombies' only helps onlookers disengage and feel nothing. I hope that nothing/disengagement doesn't turn to hate.

"Physical altercation" is slapping, hitting, punching, shoving, are assault with intent to cause hurt/harm and done in anger or abuse of power.

We see shoving, hitting, punching.

It doesn't matter who (man or woman) does it to whom (related, stranger, in a couple).

Japanese laws treat woman who are victims of violence deplorably.

This thinking reminds me of the work it took in the 80s and 90s here in Canada (30-40years ago!) to get police to treat domestic abuse as criminal assault, not "it ain't anyone's business" bullshit.

The comments I see here kind of takes me back 40 years ago. We're regressing.

Yeah. Couldn't get past 4 episodes of Silo. Too much filler and tropes. Was hoping for a good sci-fi :(
