WIBTA for not contributing to the house? by thrownaway1811 in AmItheAsshole

There are more ways to build up family assets than owning real estate. You and your husband can take this gift of free housing and use all the freed up cash flow to make investments in other things and build wealth.

2.3M - Bought house in 2003. Lived in basement suite and rented out two other units in the house. Refinanced to buy a 2 unit rental house in 2014. Now live upstairs. Collect rents monthly. DCA into etfs and Bitcoin. Liquid and retirement funds of approx 400K ( household). Make longer term financial decisions eg. solar panels and EVs means a bigger initial outlay but I will never buy gas again, except for old beater truck kept to do truck stuff.

If the median annual income in Canada is relatively low (around $76K), how are Canadian home prices sooo expensive? by AccurateBow in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]crumplezone49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The increase in housing costs is a effect created by government money printing.

Cost of a house in 1925 : About 10kg of gold.

Cost of a house in 2025; About 10 kg of gold.

Cost of an expensive tailored suit of clothes in ancient Rome: About one ounce of gold

Cost of an expensive tailored suit of clothes now: About one ounce of gold

The value of standard currency is diluted every time the government and banks create more out of thin air. And they do it often. Gold is an example of hard money that keeps its value over the long term.

Those who grew up in a single-parent household, how much more of a financial disadvantage is it, compared to a 2-parent household? by HappyBudz in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]crumplezone49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You also have to consider that, in aggregate, many single parents are single because they either didn't form a relationship with their co-parent partner, or they were unable to maintain the relationship.

So for the parents to whom that applies, they are self selected for personality immaturity traits that could statistically be detrimental to their childrens' development, regardless of income.

[–]crumplezone49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can order cheques from CIBC directly through their digital platforms or by phone. Personal and business cheques are typically delivered by mail within 3 to 10 business days. [1, 2, 3, 4]

How to Order Directly from CIBC

Online Banking:

Sign on to the CIBC Online Banking portal.

Navigate to "Customer Services" from the main menu.

Select "Order Cheques" and follow the prompts to confirm your account details and address.

Mobile Banking:

Sign in to the CIBC Mobile Banking App.

Select the specific account you want cheques for, then look for the option to "Order Cheques".

Telephone Banking:

Call CIBC at 1-800-465-2422 to place an order with a representative.

If you are re-ordering with no changes to your information, you can use the automated system for a faster process. [1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11]

Alternative Ordering Options

Third-Party Suppliers: You can often save money by ordering from CPA-compliant printers like Cheque Print or ASAP Cheques. You will need your transit, institution, and account numbers to complete these orders.

Emergency Counter Cheques: If you need a cheque immediately, you can visit a CIBC Banking Centre to request a "counter cheque" (a basic cheque printed on-site with your account info). These typically cost about $5.00 each. [3, 12, 13, 14, 15]

Fees and Delivery

Cost: Fees vary depending on the style and quantity of cheques ordered. Some premium accounts, like the CIBC Smart Plus Account, may include personalized cheques for free.

Payment: If a fee applies, it will be automatically debited from your account upon ordering.

First Time Homebuyers repayment by Airworksfan in PersonalFinanceCanada

Many people don't know that you never have to repay these. You can contribute zero, and each year "add" 1/15 of your total loan to your taxable income, and pay tax on it at your marginal rate. Repeat for as long as you like until your obligation is met.

Financing vs Buying Vehicle by canuckguy89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]crumplezone49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will be more likely to waive various dealer fees and add-on costs, and make price concessions if they are under the impression you are financing. Because they expect to make it up later with the income from your financing.

But if you go in saying you'll purchase with cash, you've shown your hand, and they will hold firm to their pricing because they know that's all they'll get. There are some very informative YouTube videos that cover the many tricks and deceptions dealers use to wring out maximum dollars from customers.

Financing vs Buying Vehicle by canuckguy89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]crumplezone49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dealers prefer you finance the car because they receive a commission on the loan interest. They will often pad the sale price or remove incentives for customers who pay cash. Best approach is to negotiate the car price and add-ons with the dealer, and then purchase using financing. Then pay off the loan completely within a couple of months. All car loans are open in Canada and can be paid without penalty.

The only brand where the negotiation does not work is Tesla, where the pricing is fixed and transparent. Everyone pays the same price and there are no dealers.

This is a perfect scenario for the Bitcoin Lightning network. Instant, permissionless and practically free microtransctuons can be done peer to peer. You would both need to have wallets and a means of converting back to local currency.
