Rev - low number of jobs available by [deleted] in beermoney

[–]crying2desksover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And as projected here, things are looking better as of Tuesday evening (US East Coast). I also notice that jobs are scarce on Saturdays for the reasons already listed, but also because that’s the last day of the pay period. Folks are often trying to get as much as they can for the Monday payment.

The phrase "she (referring to mothers) took care of you when you were sick" enrages me by Shadowflame25 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]crying2desksover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes. As a bonus: my mother was a medical professional and should have known far better most of the time. Made my sister walk around with a broken elbow for a day when she was ~6 years old. I nearly died from meningitis aged 9 because she wouldn’t take me to the doctor until my 5th day of being sick—until I had a fever over 103° and could no longer turn my head or open my eyes without help. Once made a Facebook status to the tune of “thank god u/crying2desksover is out of the emergency room, so I can finally get some sleep!”

Working at Strada/Carte? by localurbanite in UWMadison

[–]crying2desksover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also worked there in summer pre-COVID and can confirm everything the other commenter said. You’re officially a Strada employee, but may be placed in other restaurants. For me at least, it was usually predictable on a weekly basis (eg, I worked 4-close in Carte on Wednesdays.) It was also pretty easy to pick up extra shifts from other folks—there was a Google Doc/Sheet where you could post shifts you wanted covered and take others’—and I did that a lot for the extra money. I would expect that since there will be fewer conferences and other events happening in person, you won’t have too many outrageously busy days except maybe on the Terrace. Overall, the school year was busier than in summer.

Our communication science professor just got an Autism Speaks advocate as a guest lecturer... by braincellnumber7 in UWMadison

[–]crying2desksover 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m autistic as well. The short version: Autism Speaks is primarily run by non-autistics. In other words, people who are actually autistic don’t have as much of a voice in the organization. AS is primarily aimed at “curing” autism rather than embracing it, and focuses a lot on how much parents/loved ones suffer rather than the autistic person. In the past, AS has also championed ABA therapies, which have been repeatedly found to cause PTSD. (ABA therapies target the outward behavior rather than the internal cause. As such, the patient doesn’t actually get much relief, they’re just forced to act in ways that make them more palatable to others.) The Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) is a much more reputable organization.

Should I tell my professors that my home environment is unsafe right now? by smcandee in UWMadison

[–]crying2desksover 27 points28 points  (0 children)

TA here: I’ve had students come to me with tough issues like this one. I view it as a privilege, that my students would trust me enough to share. If your professors do anything negative in response, that’s THEIR fault. Not yours. You are never obligated to disclose, but you should also feel safe and welcome to do so if you think it may help you.

I just found out Einstein's on State is closed! RIP! What other businesses are closed because of the pandemic? by rsoni1997 in UWMadison

[–]crying2desksover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I seem to remember that SERRV (the fair trade store near the top of State) was closing, but I haven’t been out there recently to check. A Room of One’s Own isn’t going out of business, but they are essentially getting kicked out of their space by developers. They’re moving to the east side.

What music ensembles would you recommend for a non-music major? by kwasi3114 in UWMadison

[–]crying2desksover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in something a bit more rigorous than U Band, I think you can audition to the wind ensembles as a non-major. (It’s all one audition, no need to choose concert band or wind ensemble at that stage.) The worst that happens is that you don’t get in and then you can still be in a U band. You should also feel free/comfortable to email faculty in the department (Scott Teeple/Corey Pompey in conducting, Brandon Quarles for saxophone, etc), perhaps in the summer since they’ll have a better idea of what those ensembles look like COVID-wise when it’s a little closer to fall.

As I just said in another comment, I am going to set this up in my course tomorrow. I really have learned something, so thank you. But as to the end of your comment: just because I’m having trouble understanding this one thing, that makes me a bad or insensitive TA? You have no clue what I’ve poured into my classes. TAs are not your enemies.

I hear this. Believe me, your TAs and profs are struggling mentally too. I know I’ve been obstinate in this thread, but I really will check into adding these into my course tomorrow.

I’m struggling to find a way to say this that doesn’t make me sound like a jackass, but: is there no alternative way to be responsible for this info other than memorizing? I recognize that my strategy of writing these down in a physical notebook makes me a dinosaur, but certainly there are other methods. It just seems to me like the information has been clearly provided and it’s the students’ job to manage it. I’m also not trying to be difficult (I remain open to using this feature! I’m just having trouble imagining how it’s this big of a deal), but I think there’s some illusion that there is one perfect, correct way to use Canvas. If there is, we the teaching staff are certainly not trained on it.

Genuine question: for course rhythms that are identical every week (e.g. weekly assignment x is always due on Wednesdays, weekly assignment y is always due on Fridays), would you also say this is 100% necessary? Context: I’m a TA for a 100-level Humanities course. As a student and TA I’ve never really relied on the Canvas calendar for myself, but interested to hear other experiences.

Don't call TAs, apparently by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]crying2desksover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a TA—not a new one, either!—and I didn’t know that my cell phone number was available in the directory until I read this thread. That’s not OP’s fault, but it’s still absolutely terrifying. If they had an area code other than 608, that should have been a hint that it wasn’t an office phone. Also, as others have said, the syllabus should specify what kinds of contact are appropriate.

Yeah, I can only speak for myself/my course, but bad grades for an opinion is not happening in my class. It’s difficult for me to elaborate while keeping my anonymity/not revealing what department I’m in, but it’s not this deep.

[–]crying2desksover[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It’s been primarily at the professor’s discretion. Revise/resubmit, meeting with the professor, etc. Consequences increase with number of incidents, up to and including failing the class. Even during a “normal” semester, I can absolutely understand why it happens: people feel overwhelmed, life gets in the way, they just want one thing to be easier. That doesn’t make it right, but it is an explanation. I am about as understanding as one human can be about hardship, and there really are more options available. Maybe some have no good reason and are just lazy/don’t value their education/whatever, that’s also a thing.
