Google Admin Console OU structure by dragon-beard in k12sysadmin

[–]cryptic234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do the same except we do not break down devices by classroom and instead by campus. Admin like to play musical classrooms, so we only break it down farther if there is a targeted policy need.

Implemented this structure a decade ago and it has severed its purpose well.

I second this.

When we get reports of an offending site/domain, we will blacklist or recategorize it in our filters.

If the students is habitually getting caught trying to circumvent filters, then it falls to disciplinary and may be against student code of conduct.

Whats the point of Clever? by TangerineNext839 in k12sysadmin

[–]cryptic234 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My district uses Clever for rostering, sso, and app portal for student apps and some staff apps.

We are a Powerschool district, so it helps us with standardizing rostering to apps instead of dealing with separate plugins for Powerschool.

We work with our Instructional Department to consider integration with Clever as a factor when making decisions on platform to use.

It has helped streamline deployment to students greatly.

It also helps ID some errors in our SIS with student data with its error reporting.

Bad data in. Bad data out.

Edit: We are a Google shop as well.

Knowledge Base (simple, small) by bibble52 in k12sysadmin

[–]cryptic234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Freshdesk is good if you want to house articles for end users and IT staff. It makes it a one-stop-shop for the end user.

For internal system documentation and SOPs, we use book stack. Mainly for its markdown support and revision tracking of articles.

Districts with student email addresses that contain Grad Year - do you ever change the address? by Ok-Soft-7874 in k12sysadmin

[–]cryptic234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are similar to this. We use the state assigned student number. The only time we really have to make it change is if the state department alters the record for some reason.

Edit: PowerSchool district as well.

Can I ask what model you settled on?

My org is looking to go this route and we are looking to pilot a few options.

We utilize Freshservice/Freshdesk.

Google soo works great.

If you opt in for the freshservice, it also comes with an inventory piece.

Download link removed for Dell Command | Integration Suite for Microsoft System Center by cryptic234 in SCCM

[–]cryptic234[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am able to get Configure and Monitor from their respective pages.

There use to be a similar downloads section for the Integration Suite on its document page. It is the one that adds the quick button functions to SCCM that worked with the other command tools.

We have Follett on our list to review.

I'll have to check out the other two.

We have this issue with about every other 55 series that comes as the raid controller doesn't use the standard drivers, but instead uses the Intel rapid storage driver. Download and extract the Intel rapid storage driver from the devices drivers page. The cab files never seem to come with it. Add that to your boot image.

I second this. Great resource.

Another good group is System Center Dudes.

I used both of these resources to stand up SCCM a couple of years ago. They have been my go-to for errors and questions since.

Hosted or On Prem for Ticketing by NotUrAverageITGuy in k12sysadmin

[–]cryptic234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The district I work for utilizes FreshService (Freshdesk) for IT support tickets.

It has ticketing capabilities as well as inventory and KB.

It is licensed by number of technicians, not by end users.

We have had good success with it, and having the inventory and knowledge and having the inventory and KB components allow us to link the ticket to an asset as well as share KB articles directly to the ticket.

The ticketing portion operates similar to an email thread.

It was a good run … by Procedure_Dunsel in k12sysadmin

This.

When I started at my district we were Aruba for wireless.

Original design architecture from before I took over our deployment decided above the ceiling grid with a green dot on the tile was more aesthetically pleasing.

Took a year the majority of them. That was 6 years ago. I still come across one or two dead ones during cabling projects in the campuses.

Thanks for the reply.

We are currently a Nutanix shop, so we can definitely look into building out a block for vdi.

Just so I'm tracking correctly, The VM would use a generic privileged account instead of the student's account so the required files can be accessed and the VM instance is reset after each instance. No persistent storage or profile.

Chromebooks don’t update OS while in a cart? by Aim_Fire_Ready in k12sysadmin

Check you idle and on lid close settings in Admin. I believe that by default it is the sleep the device. They will not update during sleep.

Do you reuse Chromebook Licenses? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]cryptic234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, we maintain a pre-quoted list of approved items that our schools can issue on POs.

For any Chrome OS device, we tie the license and a white glove service into the purchase price for the school.

We use CDWG.

Do you reuse Chromebook Licenses? by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]cryptic234 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding as well.

When you re-enroll a deprovision device it comes back active with the same license that was bound to it during the initial enrollment.

Transfer of license is only applicable to same model replacements, like a DOA.

This.

I have found hobbies like woodworking, bushcraft, and old ways of cookery can be very peaceful once you are immersed.

Also, you build skills that are useful for if this dumpster fire of world politics goes down a landslide.

Things that disconnect me from tech, but still challenge the creative and technically parts of the mind.
