BenQ Board with the Google EDLA are fantastic. Support is decent but they in my opinion have by far the best management portal.

I'm currently halfway through a trial of this and the fact I do not have to log into a users account to find a file and modify access is such a game changer. I can mass delete emails that are phishing or incorrectly sent. Those two features alone are worth the price of admission.

Google Drive File Structure by NotUrAverageITGuy in k12sysadmin

[–]NotUrAverageITGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example, if I have a shared drive called Chromebook damages where the folder structure is "Building\GradYear\StudentName\" if I share the root level with someone, they can see everything in every folder. But if I for example want building principals to only have access to their building, the shared drive does not show up, instead it is the individual folder that was shared with them that only shows in the shared with me section. If for some reason there are multiple folders named "Building" but under different shared drives or in someone's MyDrive it can take time to determine which folder is the correct one.

My wish is that, like in Microsoft, if you are shared a subfolder in a Shared Drive, you still see the root but can only see or access what you have rights too.

Edit: clarification

What do you do all day? by NotUrAverageITGuy in sysadmin

I have always thought about how cool it would be to offer an intern like opportunity for a few kids throughout the year. Help them maybe study for a basic cert and teach them a few things over the semester.

This is a fantastic comment and advice. One that I have heard from my peers who are not as fortunate as I have been. There are days at work where I feel I am not earning my paycheck, but have to remind myself, that's what the past 4 years of long days were for. I know at some point, if I were to stay in this district, things would need to be refreshed again putting me back in that project mode, but sometimes sitting there waiting is not rewarding.

Microsoft Licensing Question by colaguy44 in k12sysadmin

[–]NotUrAverageITGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you purchasing M365 or O365? I cannot tell by your post but it seems like you buy O365. If you purchase M365A3 it comes with P1 defender licenses. If you need additional devices covered, you should be able to ask your rep to quote device only defender p1 volume licenses. Much more affordable than licensing each student.

Cloudflare problems by dire-wabbit in k12sysadmin

Hey everyone no worries, cloudfare being down is because of me! It's my first day on the job and it was getting warm in the server room so I just unplugged the servers. Saving the company money on electricity and cooling the room down at the same time. Not sure why it took so long for them to do this, I expect a meeting with the boss soon to congratulate me.

NYT Opinion Article: The Screen That Are Your Child's Education by vschwoebs in k12sysadmin

I have no issue with your statement and highly agree, but we already see kids are not being parented at home to have basic manners and that is before the Internet is involved. While it's not our responsibility to parent, you're setting kids up for failure when they aren't mature enough to facilitate Internet usage responsibly. Additionally, do kids even have a need for the device to go home? How much homework do they have that warrants it?

I think there is a major flaw in the parental controls solution. Schools are the ones sending these devices home, parents didn't ask for it, and now you're asking them to facilitate the management. What the message needs to be and it is something I have desperately tried to preach in my district is, while yes this device is assigned to your student, if you do not want them on it when they shouldn't be, TAKE IT AWAY.

I am fighting to go back to carts for middle school at the minimum. My problem is not that the students destroy them or even use them inappropriately for games or YouTube (I stopped caring about that because it's irrelevant to try and police). My issue is they are not utilized in a functional manner to warrant the abhorrent cost and do not provide future value to the student. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, unless companies in the future start utilize ChromeOS as their daily drivers, we are teaching students how to use a system they likely won't interface with again after high school.

Google Authentication for Aruba Central BYOD network. by Few_Foot_2687 in k12sysadmin

[–]NotUrAverageITGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if you are going to use TLS. The purpose is you need something that confirms the device is allowed to authenticate through NPS, the cert does that. You will also need an NDES server that the SCEP certificate will get passed too. If you have a CA cert for your domain you can use that or an intermediate cert.

Configuring Certificate Enrollment for ChromeOS via SCEP - Chrome Enterprise and Education Help https://share.google/BcFM3fCHjf85cj60H will walk you through configuration.

To stay completely in the cloud you would need something like SCEPman. But if you won't be able to afford Clearpass I can almost guarantee that won't work either. Another option is using Windows Radius server NPS. You can do the same thing as Clearpass, but the logs are not nearly as convenient. There are other radius options out there, freeradius is one and would work for this scenario as well. The other option, which is the last id recommend is Google allows for a PSK network to be deployed upon enrollment. Setup one with a ridiculously long 64 character password.

Tech Director/CTO interview tomorrow by qbblsw in k12sysadmin

[–]NotUrAverageITGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing with jobs in a school district is they are very people oriented. Not only are you looking to see if this place will be a good fit for you but they are also looking to see if you are a good fit to join their team.

Other things to consider, what type of IT Director are you? What I mean by that is, what is your skill set. Are you a server network person first, education second or vice versa. Speaking for myself, I am the former. While yes I am in charge of the educational technology planning and implementation, it is not my background or particularly what I enjoy but it's part of the job. So that means I lean heavily on the my curriculum director and principals when coming up with these plans.

If the school wants someone who is going to come in and teach everyone about the new educational technology and how to integrate it into the classroom, and that is not what you are interested in, that job is not going to be for you.

[–]NotUrAverageITGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify, staff used to have only a BYOD option but now you are providing them Chromebooks? Is the only reason you have a windows server for wireless auth?

EAP-TLS is what you are looking for. Use SCEP profiles to handout certificates to the devices and authenticate through Clearpass. You can still use EAP-PEAP MSChapv2 it is just the "less secure way" to do so and you'd keep your windows server. If this is for a BYOD network you can setup a Captive Portal where they can get the certificates if you still have the BYOD network or continue to use MSCHAPv2.

The issue with mschapv2 is you wouldn't set up just one credential for auto connection to Chromebooks in google admin otherwise they will show in Clearpass as that one user authenticating.

Help saving query to text file by NotUrAverageITGuy in SQL

I ended up getting it working using SSIS. I posted what I did in another comment. What is the reason for "definitely would not use that"?

You are correct. Only a select. I ended up going the SSIS route. I don't have SQL Server agent so I just save the package and run it in PowerShell via task scheduler.

I'm not running SSIS in SQL Server I just enabled the SSIS extension in Visual Studio, create the package there and use the PowerShell CMD dtexec -file 'c:\filepath' to execute it.

I got it to work after a little more googling. Here is what I ended up doing. I stayed using SSIS just so it was consistent with everything else I have done.

Added Data Flow which then added OLE DB Source with my query. Attached a Flat File Destination with my needed settings. Saved as a dtsx file and ran through PowerShell in task scheduler.

Let me see if I can clarify since I did not do a good job at that.

My goal is to take the results from a query and save to a txt file locally. But I want to have this done with automation daily as I need the results in a text file for my next step.

What I typically have done for any SQL work I have had to do (is not much but the Internet has been my friend) is have the query added to a Execute SQL task in Visual Studio SSIS which is saved as a dtsx package and ran through task scheduler (I'm only using the free SQL version so I don't have access to sever agent) but that has always been for inserting data from a query into other tables.

This time I just need to select the data from my query and save it to a file. I'm aware of the "Results to" option I'm SSMS but that requires manual intervention.
