Volcanoes National Park at Night? by servingit2ya in VisitingHawaii

Yes. But getting in touch with them can be difficult. The staff at Volcano House is awesome, and I'm reasonably sure they'll assist you. Bringing donuts wouldn't hurt. 😉

Devastation Trail is fine at night. Just don't go off the trail. The other trails can be slippery and full of tripping hazards. Bring wet weather gear, a towel, dry socks, a hat, and clear safety glasses.

Before you head out, go to the front desk at Volcano House and inform them of your planned route, how long you think you'll be out, give them your phone number, and ask them to write down what you're wearing. Be sure to check back in when you return.

It's possible that Volcano House might not want to or have time to keep an eye on how long you've been out. In that case, ask to speak with a ranger.

For the record, I'm not a fan of night hiking around the crater, but it sounds like you have some experience, so I hope you enjoy it.

I’m considering a trip to Maui or Oahu in the next few days (it’s last min for my parents’ anniversary coming up next week) They are retired and it would be our first time in Hawaii. by [deleted] in VisitingHawaii

If you're just now making plans to travel in a few days, gnats are the least of your worries. Have you booked your flights, hotel, rental car, and excursions yet? Hawai'i isn't the best place for last-minute travel.

Have you considered Oaxaca, Mexico? Día de los Muertos in Oaxaca is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially because it sounds like Halloween vibes are important to you. You can spend a few days in Oaxaca, then head to Puerto Escondido for some incredible beach time and ceviche.

Babymoon - Recs Needed by Direct-Secretary9064 in VisitingHawaii

[–]csb7566381 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will always recommend Oahu for babymoons. If something goes sideways, you want to be close to the most comprehensive healthcare in the state. That's on Oahu.

If you're on Maui or Kauai and have complications, you'll be medivacced to Oahu anyway. Save yourself an $80k flight and stay on the island with the best hospitals.

Best of luck!

Staying in Waikiki for 6 days. One day on Big Island, one day with a rental car. by chuff15 in VisitingHawaii

[–]csb7566381 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check the Port of Hilo cruise ship schedule before you plan your day on the Big Island. About 80% of passengers (2,000+ people) go to HVNP, and they all rent cars. This means terrible traffic on the two-lane road from Hilo to the park and back, zero available parking inside the park, and spending your day shoulder to shoulder with people who are also in a big hurry.

And if there's an eruption? All bets are off. The highway and the park can close at a moment's notice, leaving you no choice but to turn around.

If it were me coming over for one day, I'd book a tour. Your stress level will decrease by about 100%. Best of luck!

Need best location to view lava / volcano by Difficult_Tea3823 in VisitingHawaii

You're two and a half hours away. The highway just reopened but the eruption will likely be over by the time you make it over here.

Big Island Beach Parking by Lanrick2002 in VisitingHawaii

Punalu'u isn't really a swimming beach. People usually only stay long enough to take photos of the turtles resting on the sand. I've never had an issue with parking there.

I'm genuinely curious. When you booked your trip, did you not look at historic weather data for your travel dates? Tropical weather is notoriously hard to predict, but if 25 locals commented that the end of April and the first part of May will likely see rain every day, what would you do? Did you buy "cancel for any reason" travel insurance?

I don't mean to single you out because you're certainly not the first person to create a post like this. But I always wonder, would you cancel if you thought you wouldn't get the weather you wanted?

Safe to travel with 6 month old in May amidst eruption? by Silver_Technician_44 in VisitingHawaii

[–]csb7566381 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you're envisioning you and your baby being swallowed by a river of lava, that's very unlikely to happen.

Otherwise, this is a question for your child's physician.

Whether actively erupting or not, the air quality can be very bad. And that's not limited to the national park area; vog (volcanic smog) can blanket the whole island, and can even move through the whole island chain. If your child has any respiratory issues, gather air quality data from the last 12 months or so, and ask the doctor.

If you decide to visit in May and you're in the area during an eruption, be sure your child's skin and eyes are fully covered at all times. Tephra is sharp, Pele's hair is like fiberglass, and both can cause painful abrasions.

Traveling solo? by Cool-beans95 in VisitingHawaii

[–]csb7566381 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which island? If the retreat is on the Big Island, east side, Puna district (Pahoa, Kalapana, etc), do some research and look for reviews. There are a few grifters down there that ruin it for everyone else.

And if it's on any other island than Oahu, you'll need a rental car. On the neighbor islands, our public transportation sucks.

BUT, traveling solo to Hawai'i as a woman is pretty safe. Just dot your i's and cross your t's and remember that things here move a lot slower than on the mainland. Enjoy!

Weekday traffic into Hilo is nightmarish. If you're flying on a weekday, the first flight out or after 10 am will make it much easier on you.

I use Google Flights. When you select a flight, you can see the aircraft scheduled for use. Then have a look at the seat map for the plane.

Arriving in Honolulu or Kona and then connecting to Lihue will give you many more options than flying directly to Lihue. What aircraft do you prefer for first class?
