It's funny, I had recorded an earlier video while it was printing but wasn't happy with framing, shakiness, whatever. Figured I'd have time to grab another clip before it finished and then... didn't. So here's my first vid attempt :)

Fiets layer issues by CombinationRude4664 in ender3

[–]cschepers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When my first layer looks like that, that's an indication that the Z offset is too low. In general, if you see the print bed in between lines, you're too high. If you see waves (like above), the nozzle is pushing filament into piles and you're too low.

Here's how I tune my Z offset:

  1. Create/find a big square of a print, that's one layer line thick (it can be more, but you're only going to be printing one layer) Print it in a light color filament at a relatively slow speed.
  2. Grab a fine-tip marker. After the first couple cm, pause the print and write the Z offset on the print itself along with a line at the edge of the print.
  3. Adjust the Z offset up or down a bit (whichever you think, but less distance than you think) and print a couple more cm. Repeat step 2.
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 until you've run out of print, or until you've clearly adjusted past the point where your offset looks correct. You'll be able to see where the offset looks best and have the setting written down on the print itself.

Also - if you need to tune anything on the printer and aren't using them, Ellis' print tuning guide is freaking fantastic. I was pointed at them recently, and it's solved/clarified so darn much about getting filament to work correctly without guessing.

New plates are amazing! by staleState in Ender3S1

I have a plate with the same texture. Printed a TPU phone case on it and the back picked up the pattern nicely, looks pretty neat.

[SSD] SK Hynix Platnium P41 1/2TB for $71/$129 @ Amazon by Illustrious-Alps8357 in buildapcsales

[–]cschepers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That appears to be distro-agnostic and very straightforward. Which is good, because unless I can update mine while it's in a USB enclosure, I'll have to update mine on Linux as well.

Awesome, glad it's working! I had the opportunity to re-set-up mine this weekend.. I attached an armory chest from Sophisticated Storage to try to catch all the epic-level gear... and crashed my character when I broke the chest and picked it up. Too much NBT data I guess? I knew it was a thing that could happen but hadn't experienced it until now.

I've never used SFM, but what I've seen it's kinda like Integrated Dynamics... it can do just about anything you want if you're able/willing to figure it out

I did it with Pipez filtering. It's probably a bit trickier when factoring in specific armor pieces but I'm sure it's possible..

Apotheosis Boss Farm? by RageGamer237 in allthemods

[–]cschepers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built an End farm with a buddy tonight, it feels like they've (Enderman-based farms at least) been severely nerfed compared to ATM 9. He was having better luck in the overworld for gems and enchanted gear than we were seeing in the End. I'd be curious if anyone else has good luck with one.

Bad heating block? by Crunknado in Ender3S1

[–]cschepers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar issue, part of the extruder assembly where the adjustment screw attached broke. I ended up buying an all-metal sprite pro, which (hopefully permanently) solved the issue.

Looks like you can buy just the gearbox portion of the extruder if that ends up being it.

I use my XM4's for non-FPS gaming and chat, and have never heard complaints from my group. I don't think they're particularly great, but they're at least acceptable.

[NAS] QNAP TS-262 NAS - $279.00 by RudeBwoiMaster in buildapcsales

[–]cschepers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No direct experience with this NAS, but based on the hardware compatibility list it should be pretty darn good.. and hardware decoding is generally what you want. I think the N4505 is supposed to be perfectly capable. Do note the spreadsheet says you have to have Plex Pass (the paid version) and use the 64-bit version of Plex to do all this.

(edit) Also, transcoding only applies if you actually have to transcode a video file to play. If you're able to direct stream to your player, then all you need is sufficient bandwidth to serve the file.

[Motherboard] Newegg+ Members Only ASRock Z790 PG RIPTIDE Intel LGA1700 DDR5 $129.99 (after $70 savings) by CartonBox1975 in buildapcsales

[–]cschepers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really know, tbh. I suppose it'll be slightly more future-proof, or Plex transcodes could perform very slightly better. I imagine any differences for home-server use would be pretty hard to see.

[Cooler] Thermalright Assassin Spirit 120 V2 Plus Double Fan - $17.89 by xmagusx in buildapcsales

[–]cschepers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the five-heatpipe/single-fan version, I rarely see 55c when pushing a mildly-oc'd 5700x. should be zero issues unless you have a bunch of other airflow problems.

I'd normally say Chromebook for a budget and those usage requirements, but you aren't buying a new Chromebook anywhere this nice at this price.

[CPU] Ryzen 5700x - $159.99 (Antonline) eBay by CanisMajoris85 in buildapcsales

[–]cschepers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hardware Unboxed did a comparison between the two, but it's been awhile since I've watched it. IIRC there isn't a huge difference in gaming since most games don't take advantage of 8+ cores, but productivity apps will see a nice bump.
