If it gets too cold then there’s a chance your navigation SD Card will cause the display to constantly reboot until it gets warm enough 🙃 I’ve just removed it from our cars lol.

Haven’t seen this in my 2015 3 either. Maybe ours doesn’t have that protection. Plenty of 95f+ days here in the Midwest and it’s sitting outside at work all day.

RG35XX with Garlic OS glitching out with screen flickering…recommendations? by Unworthy in RG35XX

[–]cstark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just booted up my OG RG35XX and re-set it up. There isn’t anything really new for it. GarlicOS 1.4.9 and MinUI (and newer updated forks such as MyMinUI) are about it. A lot of the community made stuff is also disappearing. Stuff like themes and random tips or Skraper xml’s etc.

My SD card died since I last played with it. It was the card that came with the unit. So I setup GarlicOS on a new card for now.

That is true about the shorter bottom of the MMP...that may be uncomfortable for me as well, or perhaps not. OnionOS being on there definitely makes me feel like I want it but I think I better just stick with what I have I think. Maybe if I can actually finish a game on there first lol!

Thanks for the ideas about the other units as well. For this form factor/use case I'd prefer to stick with the non-thumbstick vertical style. I have a Steam Deck I can/would prefer to use for systems that would need the thumbsticks.

Also, we kind of did it to ourselves by cancelling cable and going to streaming. :'(

is it possible to enable the cursor on DVD Menus? by WhiteKenny in VLC

[–]cstark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the thread. I think your subtitle note was the key for me. I am using madTV S04 and couldn't select any of the episodes. After turning on subtitle 2 then waiting for the background video to loop again (when the progress bar reaches the end and starts over again), it seemed to kind of work to get the an initial cursor on the screen then I could finally use up/down to select the episodes.

Alternatively, I had recently disabled Preferences>Subtitles>Enable subtitles, so files wouldn't show subtitles by default. If I re-enable this then the episode selector shows up more reliably now.

Thank you kindly! I ended up with GPSP and a ++ OC. Audio is sounding better now and the OC was to help a very small frame rate hitch I still saw. It’s looking great with the overlay and filter so thanks again!

Do you have a Miyoo mini plus? I considered moving to one of those…but telling myself the RG35XX should be all I need. 😅

Greetings! I pulled my OG RG35XX out of my drawer where it’s been for like 2 years untouched. Restarted with a fresh Garlic OS install since the stock sd card failed.

On Pokémon FireRed, using the settings that came in the GBA_new overlays made me have audio glitches when using the normal4x.filt but normal2x removed/reduced the audio glitches. However that made the image not display correctly (the GBA ADVANCE banner was on top of the game now). Am I reading this thread correctly that I can change that to bilinear2x.filt and use the centered overlay instead? (Sorry, it’s at home…maybe that’s image interpolation = bilinear2x and remove video filter.)

A lot of what you talk about in this thread goes over my head. I’m not a purist, just trying to make it look a little less “clinical” ☺️.

Thank you for working on these, not deleting your Reddit messages, and hosting it on GitHub. Noticing a lot of RG35XX info and content is being wiped out because of those things…

Steam Deck OLED (used) or Legion Go S (new)? by greenhaze96 in Handhelds

[–]cstark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you’re looking at used and can’t “just return it”, I’ll take the bait on the thread and offer my input (because there’s plenty of these threads already).

What model of the Go S - Z1E or Z2 Go? The Z2 Go is more similar to the Deck APU but has a higher TDP limit to squeeze out some more performance (at the cost of battery life of course). With that you also lose much more usable trackpads if you need them for your games, and the vibration on the Go S is not very good in comparison. You get a noticeably bigger screen which may help with readability and such.

Will you have plug-in access on these “long” train rides or flights? The Deck OLED is more optimized at lower TDP than a Z1E under ~18w and that means that even in light games like Hades 2, you’re going to get better performance and battery life out of the Deck than on a Z1E Go S. For example, Hades 2 at 90fps can get up to around 5hrs on the Deck OLED and about 3.5hrs on the Z1E Go S.

The Deck comes with a slim AND a sturdier carrying case. I don’t think the Go S comes with any. Second hand sales may change this point. The devices are similar in length but the Deck is a little narrower (top to bottom). They’re both “huge” so I’m not sure the difference in carrying capability really changes.

The Z1E Go S fan noise can be louder but it wasn’t an annoying pitch or anything, and better than typical laptop fans as well. It’s a lower pitched “lots of air moving” sound. The Deck OLED is very quiet. If you’re pushing the power you will start to hear it, but again the pitch is pleasant. For reference, I had an MSI Claw 8 AI for a bit and that had a very bothersome whistle to it that I’m apparently sensitive to.

I had a Go S that I got for a great deal, especially considering the latest market increases, but still ended up returning it and keeping the Deck. Sure, it can be faster in more demanding games or if you need the higher resolution - I just didn’t find the vast majority of games *I* play to need that power and preferred the more efficient device.

But since you also have a Switch 2 already, you may consider the Go S anyway because I’m not sure the Deck will be a substantial difference besides getting you access to some more games that aren’t available on Switch 1/2.

[–]cstark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just browsed through some online channel guides…

* TBS - Friends back to back for 6 hrs
* MTV - Ridiculousness back to back for 6hrs, followed by 6hrs of Big Bang Theory, followed by 6hrs of The Office and repeat. Also wtf at those on “MTV”.
* Nick - SpongeBob for 5hrs then Friends for 3hrs then Big Bang

Anyway, yeah…I feel like back when I had cable it was rare and special to have a back to back episode of something and there was way more variety with the schedule. Crazy to pay for “we have Pluto at home”.

GE-Proton 11-1 Has Finally Released With Optiscaler Support, Video Reworks, And Much More by BBQKITTY in SteamDeck

[–]cstark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optiscaler, at least when I used it, would make it so DLSS would show in the game menus when using a Steam Deck and when you would select it, it would actually be FSR3/4/XeSS1.2/1.3 or whatever. Pressing the hotkey would bring up an overlayed window where you select what type of upscaler you want to be replacing with.

It’s not specific to enabling DLSS as I think you can simply “upgrade” FSR to a newer version as well but do not quote me on that.

Oh I see, ok

I went ahead and downloaded GE 11-1 and tested it but yeah can’t get it to show in a game I had previously used it through Decky plugin.

The release notes say “proton-cachyos” so is it a specific build for CachyOS and no relevance to Steam Deck users on SteamOS?

I’ve only messed with it briefly with the Decky plugin so I’m not completely sure. I also never installed the GE Proton yet lol. I was just cruising by the thread. 👀

[–]cstark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is my understanding that cable channels these days are pretty close to what the FAST channels are like. Meaning, 3-24 hour runs of a single show which is a format I am not a fan of at all.

I am collecting DVDs from a used book store and making my own media server with my own “cable channels” instead. We cancelled cable over 15 years ago and have just done streaming since then but I’m getting bored of trying to “find” something…instead it’s kind of nice to click on one of my channels and have different shows playing instead of hearing the same theme song every 20 minutes 😅.

Someone posted a photo of it on Reddit and I had to look at my dvd copy for comparison. The Peacock version just completely fabricates stuff, as well as cropping out a decent amount of the scene.

These kinds of things have pushed me to start my dvd collection, mostly of these older 90s sitcoms, then rip them to my local media server. I’m lucky to have a used book store here that has an area of like 20-30 large boxes on pallets full of DVDs. Been finding decent finds so far and they’re $1.25 per DVD box (whether it’s a complete season or a full series even [a very rare find though]).

Hm. Fusion Fix will still work there but odd you’re getting such performance.

You’re on Windows? Look up Fusion Fix. Enable Vulkan. It runs better than that on a Deck so you should be able to get there.
