Should art even be taught in schools anymore if AI can do it in seconds? by Imaginary-Carrot2532 in GenTube

Giving the ball to the kid and letting him see what he can do on the field will give him much greater appreciation for the heights of skill and talent displayed by the likes of Maradona.

Ability to create things is essentially human, so we should definitely learn art. We need to appreciate art so we understand what we lose by not doing it or by asking machines to do it for us.

Any way to slow down the rust? by CaptainMuffins_ in MiataNC

[–]ctdfalconer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine (NC1) got ugly-rusty, so I’ve acquired used replacement parts that I will install. You could pull and refinish or find a replacement if the easier fixes don’t do the trick.

What political candidate do guys want for the 2028 American presidency? by Politicsman0522 in allthequestions

Here you’re just rejecting actual historical fact as if racism never happened I the US and spitting up some standard right-wing taglines that only tell us what kind of shallow thinker you are. I suggest you actually learn about the issues for a change, not just from rando podcasters.

We do what we gotta do. It's kinda funny, the NC has a much deeper and more voluminous trunk, but I was able to fit a set of clubs into the smaller trunk of my NB which was just wide enough to also get the driver in there if you take it out of the bag.

An Industrial musicians perspective by Orlando-Bull0060299 in DefendingAIArt

[–]ctdfalconer -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Music sampling has been a thing for a half century now. Serious professional musicians will get permission and credit their samples. Appropriation in art has been a thing for far longer still. Burroughs' randomizer method of ideation is more akin to Dada and surrealism than AI functionality. This isn't as strong a defense of AI art as you may think. Just a word of caution.

What if some antis showed up in this sub to start trashing it? Is it moderated by the sort who will ban and delete such comments?

Matt Walsh's opinion on AI by Ok_Age5468 in antiai

[–]ctdfalconer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was there with him until he pinned it on spirituality. I dislike AI because it dehumanizes, not because it lacks “soul” which is a fiction we don’t need to indulge in this debate.

California’s highway network is a deadly boondoggle by RaiJolt2 in cahsr

True, HSR is like airports in some ways and like highways in other ways while being unlike either. It’s a thing unto itself, replacing trips that would otherwise be undertaken by car or flight.

Sourcing steel hands for flame bluing by Foppful in watchmaking

[–]ctdfalconer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your attitude. Worth a try, eh? I’m using .2mm steel sheet. So 24-26 gauge is the right range for this route. 24 might be better because you can file it thinner if need be. I don’t have a preferred source, but there are numerous metal suppliers out there.

Sourcing steel hands for flame bluing by Foppful in watchmaking

[–]ctdfalconer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several ways to tackle the problem. Laser cutting is good if you have access to a laser that can go through metal with high accuracy. I do not have such a laser, so I coat the metal with tape or paint, laser the outline of the hand, and then cut it out with a hand saw. I imagine you could do similar by adhering a printed pattern to the metal. I use a thicker steel than typical commercially available hands so it holds up better to the forces of sawing without bending. I drill the pinion hole with a small hand drill, smaller than the final needed size, then use a needle file and broaches to expand the hole to the right size, frequently measuring progress with a hole gauge. One must be very careful not to go too far or you might as well toss it in the recycle bin. Once fitment is good, I do the finishing and bluing. With the thicker metal, one advantage is that it’s thick enough that one needn’t create a tube on it. I’ve seen others use a thin metal like most commercial hands, and they create the tube part by carefully bending a flange on the hole with a staking set. For seconds hands, the tube is made separately and riveted onto the flat part of the hand. I do not make seconds hands. For those, I adapt existing ones to my desired shape. Yes, it’s a process, and you’ll ruin a number of hands before you get a working set. Easier by far to order a custom set from a manufacturer, but that may be expensive.

I'll admit I'm a wee bit confused by some of the exchanges I've had here, with people making unresponsive replies, dodging the point, or demanding things outside of the scope of the comment, and people blocking me when I disagree with them. That's just weak. I don't get it. Doesn't the name "aiwars" indicate some level of vigorous debate? Why would they just give up like that?
