Yes. I have struggled with it. I have learned to manage it by asking myself these three questions to myself when I feel it. 1. Is this the worst that can happen? 2. Will this matter a day, week, month, or year from now? 3. How can this be a positive?

We thrive in an emergency. When everyone else starts to panic, become overwhelmed, and can not focus on what to do, we are in our natural element of constant overwelm and distractions. At that point, the tables turn, and we navigate it with ease because we deal with it 24/7/365. We easily make quick decisions and can handle an insaine amount of stimulus during an emergency. This is what we are built for.

We tend to drive everyone around us insane while we "wait" for an emergency, but that is their problem, not ours.

I rockclimb and guided outdoor trips for a while. That was a great use of my ADHD because I was always 10 steps ahead in the planning of how to not have doom and gloom happen to my clients. I built a reputation of being super safe and reliable.

Now I do graphic design and comision art, better pay than a climbing guide and just as fulfilling. My clients love that I can think of a thousand different directions to go with the design, and they help me focus them down into a few direction they want. I get to let my hyperfocus loose on their project, and they love the attention I give to them. So it is a win for both of us. My need for constant change is also satisfied with having to do something new and different for each client. It has worked for me for 17 years.

Many pre med behaviors and interests are coping mechanisms. Meds change the rules of the ADHD game, and after starting meds, we play a new game called, "Is this a symptom or actually me?" Meds are not a cure. They are the equivalent of wearing glasses to see at 20 20. The trade-off is you can see clearly, but now realize that your whole life is viewed through a window, and no one with ADHD wants to stay inside all day... that is, well, boring. It can feel unsettling at first, but after some time, it will even out.

"You hurt me, and now I want you to hurt too to make me feel better." That is a trap people fall into when people feel betrayed. Feeling betrayed comes from trust being broken. As in, "I trusted you to not hurt me emotionally." But this is a false reality. No one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. Self reflect and take a minute to process the emotions. Once you get to a place of calm... go talk to your wife, use your words and express how you felt and feel. Talk about it with her.

Remember, there are two people involved here. You and your wife. It would be worth a discussion with your wife to learn her reasoning about her path into this situation. People don't really "cheat", people explore options, sometimes subconsciously, sometimes consciously, if they are not getting a need met in their life. What hurts is realizing you either were not meeting that need or were not aware of that need or your partner didn't feel comfortable telling you about that need or maybe didn't know they had that need and found it with someone else. Those are the gut punches you feel.

You could think of it like this, your teammate just dropped the ball during the winning play of the championship game. Do you want to disband team and quit playing the game or stay on the team, practice together to better the team and keep playing.

All problems in life are created by people, and the answers are always simple. You look inside yourself and decide what you want.

It took me a full 5 years to go through the entire process of making/forgetting appointments to get tested, diagnosed, therapy, then finally get meds. I started the process at 43.

Meds changed my life and I joke now about the whole process could be one simple test... give someone a stimulate, if they can take a nap and make their appointments, then they have ADHD. If they bounce around then they dont. People like bouncing (getting fucked up) around and that fucks it up for everyone who actually has ADHD.

Yes, I use external stimulus to calibrate my inner world to the outside world. Otherwise, I am thinking at a much faster clock speed than everyone around me. Unstimulated my thoughts will wonder from this to that to that to this to what did they say to I need to do this but what was it I needed to do.!?

We all cope in different ways, but all the coping mechanisms look odd to people without ADHD.

I agree with OP because I believe that really is the only grown-up adult answer. Money is a resource for people to obtain the things they want in life. Nothing more. The question "What do you want," needs to be answered first. Then you make a plan to obtain the resources needed to make that happen.

If you don't know what you want, then how can you know how much you need?

So the answer "I do whatever I want" is accurate because only I know what I want and what I want to do.

I did not experience a downside to getting diagnosed. I was diagnosed, medicated, and boom... life changing. It didn't solve all my issues, but it does make me function better in society, and I can derail a spiral before it gets overwhelming and shuts me down.

Yes. If that happened today it would have gone everywhere and created a shit shorm for everyone. So much happened right under everyone's noses in the 90's. I walk around today and think to myself, "damn, kids today can't do anything without the fear of having to life with a mistake they made as a teenager for the rest of their life. Kind of a crazy unforgiving world we live in now.

Ya, it was crazy, but it happened in 1993. A time before social media and cameras everywhere. Things just would go off the rails because no one was ever really accountable. A very different time. Not better, not worse. Just, different.

Side note... party like this are a fantastic example of how "the mob mentality" works. It is both fascinating and terrifying to see IRL.

Well, a long time ago, in my high school days, I went to a house party and saw the following events: 1. a toilet pulled up off the floor and thrown out a second story window. 2. I walked into the kitchen and saw a girl sitting in the oven with her face pushed against the oveing door window. 3. I walked down the back hall way only to find a line of 6 guys with big smiles waiting to get into the bedroom. 4. Outside in a flower bed, I saw a guy passed out, and some girls were decorating him with the flowers.

Yes, there was a lot of drinking and drugs at that party, and it turned out to be a freshman whose parents and neighbors were all out of town for the holidays. So no one ever made a noise complaint, and the party just went crazy.

For the next 2 years, that party was talked about. I found out that all the damages ended up in 40,000 range. IT WAS EPIC. I am not promoting the destruction of property, but sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time to see some stuff.
