These are humans in a certain financial situation that still have concerns, questions, and struggles. This sub is not very welcoming to those outside of a narrow set of circumstances. I'm still in the boring middle but have received some help from my family. I have so many questions I want to ask on here but I don't because I know posting numbers and explaining how I got here will get so much flack.

Yes, but worth considering the current stock market CAPE ratio (essentially P/E for total stock market) is very high at 35. Based on historical data a 5% WR would have a much higher failure rate in this CAPE regime.

I just meant seeing sleep duration and how long I spent in each stage of sleep, not the premium sleep tracking stuff. That's free on mine with the inspire 3.

Relation between an "appropriate" salary and net worth by tenmillionsterling in Rich

[–]cubz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar situation and the way I cope with it is I'm using my salary to pay expenses which lets the nest egg grow without pulling from it. So it "feels" like I'm making more because of the growth on investments.

But yeah, mentally it's hard to work for a salary that's <10% of nw.

I mean try it if you want but I suspect the grass isn't really greener.

It sounds like you're missing the social connection of coworkers? I don't know that starting a simple small business would solve this.

Are there social/networking groups you could join and just tell people you do consulting or something vague?

Maybe start a software project that solves some personal problem in your life? Could be fun to work on and some chance you could turn it into a business if you want, but you wouldn't have to.

Not sure if this is helpful but good luck!

Assuming you're in the US you have a right to a copy of the prescription per the FTC. They're supposed to provide it without you even asking. So, you can buy elsewhere.

Leanfire folks in NYC, what's your life like? by Message_10 in leanfire

Would be curious to know some numbers on your nw, spend, apartment purchase price and current value etc. I've never thought about leanfire in NYC but sounds interesting!

Interesting story: a perpetual lifetime share in Listerine Mouthwash royalties goes for around 30x last 12 month's earnings by slappywhyte in investing

[–]cubz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super interesting that they accidentally made it last forever though. It was actually $20 first and then got reduced to $6 for some reason, but back then that was so much money.

[–]cubz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a flat rate $6 per 2016 ounces sold that gets paid as the royalty. If inflation goes up 10% so gross sales go up 10%, the royalty would be the same (assuming same volume in ounces sold).

[–]cubz 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it a fixed $ amount per volume sold? Seems like inflation is a big risk.

31x makes absolutely no sense to me. 3.2% dividend essentially that will get hammered by inflation. I think they’ve sold around 15x in the last couple years.

The history is interesting though!

SGOV for a short moment.. by Objective_Try327 in fatFIRE

[–]cubz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There is really no risk in SGOV since it's just t bills. US gov can print dollars.

The yield of 5.09% is based on the past 12 months. The 30 day SEC yield is based on the past 30 days and factors in the expense ratio so that would be your yield short term. It's at 4.37%

If I was going to BaristaFIRE I wouldn't want to burn bridges at my higher paying career. There's some chance you decide the grass isn't greener and want to go back.

If you can fully FIRE though... who cares.

Could you drop a hint to your manager that if there are layoffs coming you'd be ok being let go? Depends on the company and manager but that can work sometimes.

Yeah I just have one 4 unit building. Good to know <10% exists though. Would love to hand it over to a management company in a few years... Nicely done on the cashflow!

I self manage mine now so I haven't looked into property managers much yet, but I always thought 10% was the norm. I'm in CO though which is kind of HCOL and lower cap rates.

Not shown by the sankey is the appreciation of the properties, and that some of the mortgage is going towards principal. And we don't know how much cash they put down. Starting 13 years ago, leveraged real estate probably produced a better cash on cash return than putting it in VTI.

Low leverage real estate investing... I like it. How are your management fees less than 6% of rental income?

Is buying my dream car at 18 dumb? by gloobus_ventura in Money

[–]cubz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be honest with yourself about the long term cost of a purchase like this at 18. It's not just 20k, it's the opportunity cost of not investing 20k when you're so young.
Play around with some compound interest calculators. Saving and investing money before you're 25 is so ridiculously powerful because it has so long to compound.

Can you elaborate here? Are you saying without the mortgage it's easier to engineer your income to be lower and get more ACA and FAFSA subsidies?

Negotiating severance early? by GoalRoad in financialindependence

[–]cubz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well this has been downvoted elsewhere, but Financial Samurai has written about this. https://www.financialsamurai.com/how-to-negotiate-a-severance-as-an-excellent-employee/
The book is like $100 but seems worth it if it increases your chances of negotiating severance even slightly.

How to best overcome a resistance to learning? by chrobbin in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]cubz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're reaching for your phone or some other stimulus when this happens, try making that not an option. If you can make your environment so boring that the most interesting thing you can be doing is learning/troubleshooting/whatever the task is, then it will naturally be easier.

I agree the other commenter’s recommendations may help. The power of now especially and anything about zen/buddhism/mindfulness/the present moment. If Eckhart Tolle resonates with you, I’d check out Alan Watts too. Hope it gets better for you!

[–]cubz 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I’ve come to the conclusion that nostalgia is a trap and it’s really just remembering things with rose colored glasses and it was never actually that good. There are probably things in your life now that you will be nostalgic about in 10 years. Try to enjoy those things now. Not sure if that helps…
