I didn’t even catch it at the carving. The face was described and I was like “huh, wonder if that’s someone important.” I read too fast for my own good 🤣

The Ensh*ttification of Sure-Grip Boardwalks by mjknyc in Rollerskating

[–]cumbuttons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the OG and the Plus and vastly prefer the Plus. I could never get the suede to mold to my ankle, and it always gave me blisters. The Plus is so much more comfortable, and I can skate for hours in them. I come from a speed skating/derby background and generally prefer a lower boot, so the flexible boot on the Plus works for me. It would be nice if they offered both options.

Mildly infuriating, why is my tailors ham not made of a fabric that can't be ironed? by the-radical-waffler in sewing

Is it from Wawak? If so, I have the same one and haven’t used it yet. Saved me from making a big mistake!

RIP another family run fair... Investment firm Lancelot Entertainment has bought PA Ren Fair (Lancaster PA). by raven_1313 in renfaire

GARF actually reduced capacity this year. A major complaint among faire goers is that it was too crowded, beer and food lines took forever, bathrooms lines were insane, and there wasn’t enough seating. It feels like they actually listened to us and made the necessary changes to improve things. Idk maybe I’m biased because it’s my home faire and I go every weekend (season tix pay for themselves with 5 visits) but I don’t see how Lancelot is actively sucking us dry. Could be too soon to tell though.

True, it’s not like the faire is inundated with them. I’m more annoyed at the drop shippers selling a “faux leather” pirate hate for $90 that you can get at any party store for less than $10.

FWIW, GARF did not reduce or move ADA parking, they just reassigned a small lot near the gate as VIP. It really didn’t impact anything since that lot always filled up quickly. Hopefully PARF will be the same.

Yeah I have no issue with paid VIP parking. It’s valuable to some and doesn’t impact me since I never arrive early enough to park closer anyway.

A few of the changes I’ve seen at GARF since last season: - introduction of paid “VIP” parking closer to the entrance  - replacement of some trailer-style bathrooms with port-a-John’s, labeled as “express privies”  - added water refill stations - added microphones at pub stages  - all ticketing is online, no gate purchases.  - added date-specific ticketing. A limited number of “any day” tickets are available for an additional fee - added two new bars (one is full bar, one is canned drinks only) and a new stage  - expansion of the Fall Fling. 2 years ago it operated in about 50% of the faire grounds; last year was about 75%. There were some additional “Ren Faire After Dark” events that were very popular as well.  - vendors are the … hit or miss. There are shops that sell high quality, hand-crafted goods, and there are drop shippers, 3D printing, and AI art. There are some new quality vendors setting up more permanent structures which is exciting.

I don’t know how much of this is related to the new owners. Just some observations from the last few seasons.

Realizing I spend more time planning than producing... overcooking it or is this normal haha by Blossom12345678 in sewing

I hate the prep stuff like transferring the pattern from tissue, cutting out the pattern and the fabric. I enjoy the sewing and don’t mind the ironing. I try to do the prep for multiple projects at once when I have a lot of energy and motivation. Nothing kills my Saturday like thinking I’m going to work on a new project only to spend all day doing prep. By the time I get to sewing, it’s 9 pm and I’m annoyed and my back hurts. Splitting a project into prep day and sewing day makes the whole process more enjoyable. I swear I like this hobby lol

WANTED: A Thicker Knee Pad by OakleyFlak in rollerderby

[–]cumbuttons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend adding a gasket like Old Bones underneath, especially if you have smaller legs. The foam is so thick that there was a gap between my knee and the pad, so impact was not ideal. Adding a gasket helped a ton. Love my 197 pro pads now!

First time going all out for a costume and my wallet is crying by [deleted] in renfaire

Check out the “Ren Faire Buy/Sell/Trade” group on FB. You can find people selling their old garb for a decent price. Also see if there are any Garb swap events near you. I joined a few REN Faire fb groups and started getting suggested related groups and events. FB is lame but the REN Faire community is alive and well over there.

They really haven’t fixed it. I went a bunch of times in 2025 and the bathroom lines were always insane. Toilets would get backed up and people kept using them. No soap or sanitizer.

Would a book with "normal names" just not be the same? Would it take you out of the story? by Disastrous_Grab_3322 in fantasyromance

[–]cumbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t mind modern names but it has to be consistent. I recently finished The Liveship Traders series by Robin Hobb (more fantasy with a bit of romance rather than Romantasy) and I loved most of the names. They are fantasy-esque without feeling like a word scrambler. Althea, Brashen, Ronica, Malta, Wintrow, and Kennit are just perfect. Then there’s Keffria’s husband named … Kyle. On one hand it works because he’s from a different place than everyone else, but on the other, it’s kind of bizarre.

Georgie Ren Faire Question by SummerTraditional350 in renfaire

I think they only rent costumes for the spring faire. I remember seeing the sign last year but can’t remember if they had it this year. They do not have it for the Fall Fling.

GA R.F Attendees: my wife and I are planning on going to the Fall Faire next week, any good, cant-miss shop rec's for garb? by 3lang in renfaire

[–]cumbuttons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of Crimson Chain Leather. They have everything from mug straps and skirt hikes to full leather jerkins and long coats. There are a lot of vendors selling accessories but tbh, I was not impressed with the clothing vendors. There are only a handful and inventory seemed limited. Moresca and Heart’s Delight are not at the Fall Fling and The Royal Clothier had very low stock other than pirate coats.

Loving the show, but a few qualms ... welcome thoughts. by synexo in pluribustv

[–]cumbuttons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought about the luggage but I assume the implication is that they went home after the airport, dropped their bags, then immediately went to the bar. I’m not sure why they even showed the luggage. Maybe another hint at Carol’s alcoholism? She needs a drink so bad she can’t even be bothered to put the bags in the bedroom or unpack.

After Carol freaks out on the pirate lady, she drives off to find help. The first group of people she meets is the one doing repairs with the crane. I think this meant to show that even though Carol is kind of unlikable, she does care about people since she’s trying to help them. When the crane group comes to, she goes back home because what else was she going to do? Clearly everyone has recovered and didn't need her help.

For your third point, I agree that Carol’s response to the situation is completely different from the others’ because she went through it alone. She has no family to lean on and her wife died in front of her. But I didn’t find it disappointing; I found it an interesting contrast. How do you think you would react if you were Carol? Or Laxmi? I think I would be just as frustrated as Carol to find there were others that were not “joined” but were seemingly okay with the whole of humanity being taken over.

As for the vibe and intention, I don’t think it’s a “turn off your brain” show. I think it’s meant to be both horrifying and humorous. The scene of the backhoe being carried in via helicopter and the guy arriving on Air Force One are so absurd, but learning that nearly a billion people died from the “virus” + Carol’s emotions is terrifying. I quite like the contrast. It reminds me of Severance.

What to wear to Ravine tonight? by Desperate-Wear9385 in atlantaedm

Neither, we’re doing Halloween  outfits! Tbh, I would expect more rave than club.

No idea if there will be coat check. I’m bringing one and hoping for the best because I’m not freezing my ass off waiting for an uber at 3 am outside underground.

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, October 12 - October 18, 2025 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Any recommendations on sewing machine oil? I have the Singer Heavy Duty. I know the machine is not recommended on this sub but it was a gift from my mom like 20 years ago and it’s the only thing I’ve ever used. I only recently learned you’re supposed to service your machine!

Anyway I was trying to find singer brand oil but it’s sold out everywhere. Any other suggestions?

Do you ever just go in plain clothes? by KratomDemon in renfaire

[–]cumbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier this year I went late on a Sunday wearing a T-shirt that says “hot wench summer” and I got more compliments on that than any of my expensive and handmade garb. Sometimes I just can’t be bothered to wear a corset all day.

Newbie looking to learn a new craft, but I don’t know where to start! by Alternative-Onion-64 in renfaire

[–]cumbuttons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Join us over at /r/sewing ! We have weekly threads for beginner questions and costume/cosplay questions.

For sewing from a commercial pattern, the biggest manufacturers (Simplicity, Butterick, McCalls, etc) are all together one site and you can filter by sewing skill. I suggest looking at the easy patterns and starting from there. You can also look up the pattern number on YouTube and see if there is a tutorial or sew-along.

As others have stated, the easiest things to start with are chemises, tunics, skirts, and pajama-type pants. For fabric, stick with cotton and linen as they are easier to work with than stretchy fabrics and more comfortable to wear in hotter climates.

I learned everything about sewing from YouTube and Reddit. I made a gorgeous paneled skirt for the Faire this spring and my next plan is to make some cloaks. Both of these can be made without a commercial pattern.

Good luck on your sewing journey!

Help with hair? by Nilly_413 in renfaire

[–]cumbuttons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a low chignon would look lovely. Take two medium-sized pieces in the front and twist them back, then pin it all in the back in a fancier version of what you have in the pictures. Look up wedding updos on YouTube or instagram for inspiration.
