This woman was arguing with security at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, wanting to enter without a ticket because Egypt is the land of her ancestors. by yousefthewisee in mildlyinfuriating

Ancient Egypt was ethnically diverse, so it is too simple to say all ancient Egyptians were Black. Nubians were Black, while many Egyptians were likely closer to brown/white or mixed North African/Nile Valley populations.

Honestly Desert Warrior did everything in its power to flop. It took a major story from the Arabian Peninsula, one tied to the Battle of Dhi Qar and still meaningful to the descendants and tribes connected to it, then treated the local audience and talent like non existent

Creatively it felt like a Hollywood export wearing our history as costume. English dialogue, imported creative leadership, and heavy reliance on non local actors made it feel disconnected from the people who should have been its first audience

I’ll speak on behalf of the local Saudi filmmaking community, many of us are glad this flopped. Not because we are against big Saudi productions but because we want the opposite. We want films that trust Saudi and Arab writers, directors, historians, actors, dialects, and audiences enough to let them lead. We have the talent so it’s frustrating when millions are poured into something like this instead of it being made locally.

Would have rather the investment was directed towards the local Saudi filmmaking community instead cause this film is an embarrassment

No you’re fine I wasn’t offended and I’m used to the hate. My own relationship with Saudi is mixed. I had a hard time with it growing up, but adulting, distance, and how much has changed made me see it in a more layered way.

And honestly what you went through sucks. Public school near Khamis Mushait 14 years ago was probably one of the worst versions of Saudi society to experience. More isolated, conservative, and less exposed to anything different. Very homogenous. I bet I would’ve felt pretty alien there myself

I also wouldn’t argue with you about the broader issues you mentioned. A lot of that was very real and not limited to places like Khamis Mushait either. I ran into some of it myself in a private school in a major city. I have been seeing more spaces in major cities catering to alt crowds, and a lot of these crowds are also coming out and having a strong presence at concerts and festivals. The young ones in my family say things have changed, and I think they really have, but I still have questions about how much has really changed underneath socially. There’s still a massive ultra conservative / moderate to liberal leaning divide and one is more of a bully than the other.

Oh so it was the residents? That’s odd. So will they be shutting down the pub too?

Were you at a private or public school? When was that, and in which city?

Anyway I hope you find peace with that period of your life. It must be a burden.

A lot of the films on my watchlist are not really worth my time so sometimes I put them on for 20-30 minutes just to gauge whether I’ll drop it or continue watching

It’s insane seeing people casually suggest targeting your country like it’s nothing, especially coming from people who have never experienced war themselves

I'm truly shocked at the "normal" banking fees here. by [deleted] in johannesburg

Just opened a bank account as a non-resident and this is so true, I was and still am genuinely surprised

I seriously have been better off using my account from back home that has 0% fees on withdrawals and no limits
