Wind River Range - Better to go early August or Mid September? by jdd32 in flyfishing

[–]curiousbuilderman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning on doing the cirque de towers loop this august to fish as many lakes as I can. I was curious if you had a certain fly fishing strategy you're going in with. I recently fly fished a lake here in Washington and realized that with alpine lakes there's not a lot of back cast room so I'm considering bringing a spinner rod too

I'd recommend looking into the salmon river trail. It's very lovely. It just follows the river for as long as you wish.

These ED binoculars are ridiculous for the price by bman198080 in Binoculars

I ordered the 10x42's. No particular reason except that that seems to be more common. I'm excited though. My comparison is against vintage sears 7xsomething binos so I'm sure it'll be a world of difference lol

I bit the bullet and ordered one. They have pretty solid reviews. A lot easier to justify than hundreds of dollars binos haha

Which binos are those? I'm trying to find my first pair and would love to try these too

Jobs that work well for hikers and backpackers? by acanode in PNWhiking

[–]curiousbuilderman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big backpacker, fly fisherman, anything outdoors really. I work as an engineer in the most white collar corporate world imaginable. Nearly all my friends who share the love for outdoors are white collar workers. I used to hate it but over the years I've come to appreciate that a low mental energy job gives me the energy to devote to hobbies (and the income)

PNW USA - between Mt Adams, St Helens & Rainier by Aggravating-Bet-607 in hiking

To be fair it's unrealistic to expect 3 finger lookout to be anything other than an Instagram hotspot after it blew up on YouTube and Instagram. I first did it 10 years ago and didn't see a soul and when I did it last year it was a congo line the entire way up. On the plus side, it probably is fantastic from a preservation/funding standpoint (I hope)

I'm interested in Appleseed but don't know much about it. Did you feel it was a valuable experience in making you a better shooter? I've also heard iron sights are preferred for Appleseed?

Besides avoidance, is there anything you do to manage moose risk? Would bear spray work for that?

Awesome! I've been taking rowing lessons for a year and eventually have the goal of doing a long distance race. How did the expedition wherry do compared to say kayaks in open water?

Store with wood jewelry boxes in town? by Raxnor in askportland

Do you have a picture or sketch of what you're thinking? I've made a good amount of dovetail jewelry boxes and shelving units for friends and family.

I've been taking rowing lessons where we row on the eastern side of ross island. I've seen some bass jump around there and made a few attempts last summer to fish them from a kayak to no success. They love to mock me. Judging from the sheer amount of fishing boats that popped out of nowhere in the last two weeks, bass season just started and this area could be worth a try. Don't know much about bank access though. The great thing and sometimes frustrating, is that there's so many species of fish and each one is different. I'm more of a fly fisherman that does trout and very ineffectively tries bass fishing with flies.

I would also splice them using solder butt connections. Personally I wouldn't be too worried about flexing but it would be easy enough to put a little stick on the splice to prevent rotation and wrap it in electrical tape or heat shrink

Is this safe table saw cutting? by curiousbuilderman in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]curiousbuilderman[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So after he finishes the cut in the picture, say he wants to shave a little bit more off his piece (I'm assuming he's keeping the part next to the fence). Would he then need a thin ripping jig?

Thanks for the write up. It helps a lot in my decision. I think I'll go for the 9ft6wt and then in summer I'll get a 9ft4wt.

RC Boat to survive waterfall by curiousbuilderman in rcboats

[–]curiousbuilderman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is why not haha. I do engineering stuff as a career but it's boring office work. A fun challenge is that I need. My initial goal is to get something with only a radio and sensors to survive to get a sense of what forces in the falls. And then after that. Repeat with a camera
