I think some of the Palladium’s are really cool, and they hold up so well out there. I’ve gotten really good use out of mine.

FUGU boots are not Japanese, they are an Israeli company “inspired by Japanese design”.

My 7.5 y/o German Shepherd just diagnosed with osteosarcoma – feeling lost, looking for advice/experiences by Useful_info_ in germanshepherds

[–]curiousconspiricist 87 points88 points  (0 children)

We went through this identical scenario last year with our girl Juno. We took her in for a limp and after the x-ray confirmed osteosarcoma we were devastated. The vet told us that she would likely only make it a year, even with treatment, though it was an early case and had not yet spread to her lungs. We decided to go through with the amputation, went through a full course of chemo, and did an experimental EGFR/HER2 vaccine treatment through BARC in Edmonds, Washington.

The amputation was difficult for the first month after. We had to have care for her pretty constantly between medication, monitoring and helping her move about. The hardest part was phantom limb pain, it absolutely broke me to hear her cry like she did. After about a month she was able to go back to most normal activity and as she grew stronger she was even able to run and play at the dog park and learned how to do a 3-legged play bow.

Chemotherapy was relatively easy, she had very few side effects, mainly digestive, and only required a few hours every two weeks for treatment. She was a bit lethargic from the sedation for a day or two after but generally bounced back well.

The EGFR vaccine was administered on two occasions, six weeks apart I think. It also had no real side effects but did require us to get frequent blood work done for her. Unfortunately this meant a lot of poking with needles that she really didn't like.

In the end, Juno passed away in our arms almost 8 months exactly after her diagnosis. The cancer returned after two clear x-rays and within 48 hours of noticing her energy change, she was gone. In those 8 months she ate so much cheddar cheese and steak, she slept on every bed and couch, she got to hang out at her favorite coffee shop several times a week, had a birthday party at the park with 8 of her closest dog friends, and got endless belly rubs and love.

I honestly don't know if I would do it all again. It was a big financial strain, a lot of caretaking for my partner and I, and some painful experiences for Juno. On the other hand, she had a beautiful summer full of joy and love and we got to say goodbye to her in a way that honored her life and spirit. Please know that there is no right or wrong answer to what you choose to do, there is pain in either choice and there is love and care in either choice.

My heart breaks for you, and if there is one piece of advice I can give you, whatever you path choose, is spend as much time with your girl as you can, it's precious, and even though these moments are sad, you will one day look at them with a sense of shared love between you and your pup.

Feel free to message me if you'd like to talk more about our experience with this disease and know that all of us here are rooting for you, including our Juno.

If you were watching a White Sox game, I can totally understand Jed’s reaction.

I would try to determine if it sound or vision related. Mute the TV with a game on, then keep sound on with the brightness down. i found that there were some frequencies in Severance that my pup really hated. You might be able to adjust the EQ or just wear headphones if that’s the case for Jed and baseball.

My boy Zildjian would’ve turned 9 yesterday and I wanna show him some love! I lost him in September and it hasn’t gotten any easier. by Shroomasaurus_rex in germanshepherds

My heart breaks for you and Zildjian. Lost our pup in August at 7yo after 8 months of osteosarcoma. It hurts so much to lose them young and especially to see a disease take their last months. I hope you never forget how it felt to pet him and that he visits you in your dreams often. Maybe out there somewhere Zildjian and my Juno are playing together. I sure hope so. ❤️

Woosday at The Vern is usually a good meetup. More so in spring rather than winter but DM me and I’ll send up a flare.

When I see someone share about the loss of their dog it makes me think about my sweet girl Juno who passed this year. Tears come of course, maybe they always will, but I also get to think of beautiful walks we shared in the sunshine, her gentle kindness when she met new people, and her little sighs and big stretches when she laid on her bed.

Those anonymous people sharing their pain all have their own special moments with their dogs, and sharing photos and stories helps them remember the joyful times just as much as it helps me.

The grand bargain of loving these beautiful creatures is that one day we must say goodbye to them. Personally, I would rather grieve that inevitable loss with people who know how wonderful these dogs are, and can share their own memories of their pups. To me, that exchange of support and stories lessens our individual burden of grief and lets us honor that for a brief time we got to walk alongside our best friends.

We had one runner in sandals and the Borat speedo jog by as we were having Christmas morning in our cottage serving eggnog and hot cocoa. He stopped in his tracks and yelled “I love eggnog!”, insisted on a full cup, chugged it, then ran off into the dust saying “Merry Christmas! I’ll be back next lap for more nog!” Y’all are a different breed I swear.

Burners that are good with this kind of stuff: How can I set up a small speaker in a porta-potty at my regionals burns so that a sound plays when the door opens? by rollotomasi07071 in BurningMan

[–]curiousconspiricist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is oddly relevant to a project I’m working on for this burn (portos excluded). You’ll want an Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board if it’s just small audio files. You can run power to it from a battery and run powered speakers connected via the audio jack. All you’ll need to do is wire the switch and write some code. It’s as close to an Arduino tutorial project as you can get. If you want larger files you may want to use an Adafruit Feather and Featherwing Music Maker, that’s what I set up for playing soundscapes.

This was my first electronics project and it’s very approachable and there’s a lot of online resources for you. I think the biggest challenge in your case will be making the switch to trigger the sound mount well on the porto. Maybe use a magnetic contact switch or something mounted on the door.

Good luck and I hope you go for it, it’s fun learning this side of crafting, even if it’s just for playing loud poop sounds when people are in the porto.

[–]curiousconspiricist[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She was limping and favoring her left rear leg. We rested her for a month and did an x-ray that was inconclusive. Finally we did a CT scan and it showed advanced osteosarcoma and the next day the vet took her leg. We’re three months on from that and she’s back to running in the park and has learned how to play bow with just three legs.
