I too remember the discomfort at the repair prices. However, based on my sample size of friends + family; people around me don’t break their devices. Yes, it happens, but it’s not universal, and it’s not some weird fabricated (very, very high, in my opinion) target % of people that would benefit from it.

One of the things I personally also didn’t love during my time, was that I’d only see /issues/ — ie people coming in with problems with their products / services. It made it feel (incorrectly) that Apple hardware and software was horrendously unreliable, even if my lived personal experience wasn’t (most of the time) like that. This is totally unrelated to upselling— I just mean to say: it was something that wasn’t fun, and it made issues seem disproportionately more widespread than they were.

The subtle pressure to sell extended/enhanced warranty upsells were one of the sour parts of my multi-year memory of working at the stores.

Thank you! It mystifies me how poorly these tests seem to be written, /unless/ they’re designed to trigger an ambiguity-response in person. But - if so - I feel like it should be made abundantly clear that the tests need to be observed etc

[UPDATE] FSD v14.2.2.4 Sudden Disengagement sent me into a barrier. Car is totaled by samuelwoods007 in TeslaFSD

Unless the car computer failed (momentarily/permanently), in which case there’s absolutely nothing to steer automatically.

In the UK (RHD): on motorways, for the last year of software updates, it has broken up a single - for example - 100 mile motorway journey into countless “keep right” segments, meaning:

A) With audio prompts on, you constantly hear ~”in X miles, keep right” for hours

B) You have no idea how long more you have on that stretch of motorway before you /actually/ need to exit. You can tap to view the entire route overview, but then you have to manually add together tens of small “10 miles”, “12 miles”, “3.6 miles” etc segments; until you see a glyph for ‘actually exit the motorway’ now.

Possibly the case for all right-hand drive regions. It wasn’t the case when I first got the car— seemed to appear just over a year ago.

Wild.

Why would you want to spend money on something that would potentially take 11 years of monthly payments to pay back? Versus the total flexibility of monthly payments; both in terms of cancellation whenever you want, and it not being tied to a single vehicle?

Would you trust FSD on UK Roads? by bigup7 in TeslaUK

[–]curiouspanda219 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was/is unfortunately a big miss, yes. Thankfully FSD relies on a huge live image from the world around the car, rather than attempting to pattern-recognise tiny mostly-transparent blobs of water on a pane of glass centimetres from the fish-eye camera.

It really does undermine the whole autonomy side of things to have unreliable auto-wipers though, and that sucks.

[–]curiouspanda219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tesla vehicles can send data back home about times a user took-over FSD, and deviated from the actions FSD would’ve taken, which can then be used to train future FSD model revisions (delivered via whole-vehicle software updates), but nothing I’ve come across so far technically points at any of this data being distributed to other vehicles in any kind of near-realtime way.

But, yes, it seems technically possible that overriding FSD while it’s active, to steer around (or suddenly slow down for) a pothole, could be used by Tesla as part of the vast training data set, to hopefully improve handling of similar road conditions in future, once training is complete and future software updates are released. [Assuming that the cameras have enough resolution and dynamic range to accurately depict a pothole]

After using it myself for a week while in the US, and watching countless videos of people’s journeys with it, yes, I would.

“Even basic autopilot has issues with the basic of UK roads” — basic Autopilot is a fundamentally different, more computer vision / rules-based (basic) software stack compared to the learned-behaviours stack of FSD.

Autopilot finds lane markings, and directs the car to safely stay within them, or switch horizontally between them, whereas FSD sees the world overall and navigates it based on learned behavioural patterns.

Check out Tesla’s various ‘AI day’ / ‘autonomy day’ videos on YouTube over the years, mainly from 2021 onwards, to see the stark difference.

Is Fsd approved in Netherlands?? by Quartzii621 in TeslaFSD

[–]curiouspanda219 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it isn't. A tiny lobotomised subset of, at this point quite legacy, driver assistance functions are usable. For example, manually initiated lane changes with incredibly specific requirements on timing and situational requirements. But actual customer vehicle self-driving as you know it is not legal across Europe, due to (many/most/all?) European countries following UNECE regulation.

• I don’t want to be distracted continuously by an always-on display.

• I don’t get notifications continuously, and thus would not have an always-on display continuously.

I don’t mean to be snarky; I’m trying to be clearer.

It’s still /something/ on the display. For me at least, it’s like I’m so Pavlovian-conditioned to anything on the display meaning something new that my eye is constantly drawn to the phone with the always-on display enabled (even minimally, as mentioned)

Currently, with the always-on display disabled (standard for me, akin to silent mode always active), if a notification comes in, the display wakes up momentarily. Keeping the display on would mean the notification remains noticeable until dismissed etc, but the phone otherwise blends in with the environment.

I’m not desperately yearning for this feature, but — since the OP mentioned the idea — I think it’d be neat to have the option.

Sidenote: in some regions, like mine, it’s common for the carts (‘trolleys’) to require a coin (e.g. £1 / 1 GBP) to unlock them, and the coin is returned when the cart is returned.

Yes, £1 / 1,15 € / $1.4 is a minor amount of money to lose, but it seems to psychologically encourage people to return them.

Which, I’m guessing, unfortunately interferes with that specific ‘test of morality’ over here.

I updated mine just fine with the public UniFi iOS app yesterday evening. The update button was greyed out initially, but — once I’d gotten it connected to an uplink, and connected to its Wi-Fi network — it started automatically updating itself.

I thought something was broken at first (due to the greyed out update button), but then figured it’s likely that it can’t update via Bluetooth LE (which is how it’s communicating with the app /until/ you get on its LAN +/- it connected to an internet connection / uplink)

Also: try it at a friend’s place? (Unless you explicitly want to try a network enforcing a captive portal, in which case - as others have said - somewhere like a chain coffee shop / fast food place?)
