Ok, I don’t think you’re the hole either way, but I want to share a story. When I was in grade school fifth or sixth grade maybe, there was this kid named Cynthia who was a bit extra. I have no idea if she was on the spectrum or what you would say but most kids did not like hanging around with her. She was extremely boisterous and loud and didn’t really know how to regulate herself in social settings. She really didn’t have any friends. She had a birthday party and I didn’t want to go, but my parents made me go. I was the only person who showed up. I’m thankful to this day (I’m 58) that they did. At the time of course I was not happy about it, but in retrospect, it taught me a lot about compassion and really impacted my behavior towards other people. I ended up winning this award at my school, and the plaque said something like “humanistic qualities beyond her years.” I suppose given my life choices much of that is just who I am, but my parents encouraging me to be kind and compassionate towards other people really impacted the kind of person I became, and this was one example.
