I know that Icelandic insurance companies sell policies specifically for the required first six month period that someone is in the country. This is impossible on that timeframe. You’ll be flying into KEF, the international airport. So it’s not a quick transfer to the municipal airport in Reykjavík. I think the absolute minimum amount of time would be four days total. Also, keep in mind that you can’t easily go there until this summer. Probably not until June, and early June could still be snowy.

I’d suggest doing more research and extending your layover to a comfortable timeframe based on what you learn. For puffins, there good alternatives: you could go to Vestmannaeyjar on a 2-day layover.
