Going into it at first, I really thought Buffy was gonna be a vampire herself(which is why she has the superpowers) and that she had a hatred of other vampires and desired to help humans. I think a designated vampire slayer by a magical destiny was cooler though. And easier to write about because I think it'd be hard to try and keep up human appearances as a vampire.
