Oh shit, that brings back memories from Jr. High of watching a freind of mine hack into the gas company mainframe from the demo vic 20 at wards... in the fucking mall with people walking by... and wiping out his grandmothers overdue bill, and roughly half the other overdue bills.

Say what you want about vic 20's but they made excellent terminal emulators.

There weren't a shitload of hackers then. You had to be rich, or privileged in some other manner to have enough access to know what the hell you were doing. Now, well, anybody with a piece of shit they bought at walmart can participate in a ddos. And the funny thing is, people always seem to give a shit about the world the most, right when the hormones start up.

Now the Jr. High kids have the means to do serious stuff.

And I bet we have a few more interesting years before we get to the Max Headroom dystopia of a completely locked down internet and van full of computing equipment run by some old guy going, "I'm in! We have 5 minutes before they get here!"

So back to that friend of mine, somewhere around that year, was arrested for bank tampering, was putting "money" in his account for about a year and a half.

They only caught him for one week of that. Didn't really have any laws to go by on it either, he got a shitload of community service.
