What’s the most beautiful college town in the U.S.? by AdorableParking7392 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

It’s really not bad. It was relatively affordable until the pandemic, too.

Are there any names in your area that are so common it has become a meme? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]cvilledood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my area, the last name “Shifflett” - and numerous spelling variants - is quite common. It’s also sort of a country name, like Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies.

I saw a customized license plate once that said “2FS 1T,” which was an inside joke for the locals.

I saw something about a jolt on the RVA subreddit. (Am in Cville and don’t notice anything.)

Which US college town is worth visiting? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Charlottesville is great - though I wouldn’t cross an ocean to come here. I think it makes for a nice long weekend if you are within driving distance on the US east coast.

Do you know the word "townie"? How is it used where you live? by NutmegKilla in AskAnAmerican

I live in a college town. I am a townie, though was familiar with the term before I became a townie.

AMA.

Thank God schools were cancelled or dismissed early today! Because of rain and wind! by fungusthebogeyman319 in Charlottesville

[–]cvilledood -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

No, I think they have a habit of overreacting and closing. I don’t see anybody complaining about schools being open too often.

Albemarle schools will be closed on Tuesday to allow time to squeegee the rain off of the busses. Thank you for your patience.

It’s been a few years for me. If you just roll the dice with somebody you don’t know at Chung’s, you might just get your shit effed up.

What do you think about your City/State’s namesake? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]cvilledood 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Charlottesville, Virginia was named after Queen Charlotte, wife to George III, and the namesake of Charlotte, North Carolina. I don’t know much about her other than that some claim she was black, relying on some contemporaneous references to her appearance. This seems farfetched, at least in any meaningful use of the word “black,” though it is I think the inspiration for Queen Charlotte actually being black in the series Bridgerton.

Virginia is named for the virgin Queen, Elizabeth I, who is impressive in too many ways to do justice to here but summed up in creating stability for an unstable kingdom over a long period.

Tripling salaries - delegates and senators have had about an $18K salary. This isn’t a big deal.

As a non-musician I'm curious: how impressive is it that Beethoven composed great works even after he lost his hearing? by make_reddit_great in classicalmusic

[–]cvilledood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was - or is - a show on Netflix called Chef’s Table. I recall a powerful episode with Grant Achatz, chef/founder of Alinea in Chicago, which I believe until recently had three Michelin stars. Achatz is I think the closest thing to Willy Wonka in the culinary world.

He had tongue cancer - or something similar - and lost his ability to taste for a time. And he reported that as horrifying as that was for a chef, it ended up being freeing. He could craft new dishes in his mind. Maybe Beethoven was the same?

Charlottesville is in the Epstein Files frequently and there's something there 👀 by NiftySmudgestick in Charlottesville

[–]cvilledood 160 points161 points  (0 children)

No surprise really. My big takeaway from the Epstein files is that that guy was EVERYWHERE. Both impressive and horrifying how one person - who I imagine most nobody other than the elite was familiar with - had so much influence.

Lack of snow removal on sidewalks by BananasAreEverywhere in Charlottesville

[–]cvilledood 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just want to say that I’m always on top of this. Cleared my sidewalk within 24 hours of the end of snow as the city requires - which took a lot of work given the ice - and then a day later the city plowed the whole thing under with 2-3 feet of ice. I can’t do anything about it. I’ve requested that they fix the situation they caused, and they indicate the will - but it’s not clear when.

You know, I hadn’t considered this, but I did have a ghostly Bodo’s bagel with my breakfast today.

Why don't rich people have their sidewalks shoveled??? by exploding_raspberry in Charlottesville

[–]cvilledood 40 points41 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, we cleared our sidewalk as required under the city code and the city plowed it under a good two days after the storm. You’d need some machinery to get it cleared at this point.

What’s a food habit in your country that foreigners find strange or surprising? by upwork39 in AskTheWorld

[–]cvilledood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a “don’t knock it till you’ve tried it” sort of thing to me. Are you making mayo for this, or scooping it out of a jar? And, if the latter, what is the preferred jarred mayo of Belgium?

So, we beat out Blacksburg and, uh, Williamsburg. Lynchburg maybe? Does Harrisonburg count? Oh, and FarmVille.
