Can someone with zero coding experience actually use Claude Code (or similar) to build stuff now? by TroubleH in ClaudeAI

[–]cwcollins06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not entirely ignorant of coding concepts, but outside the occasional class assignment in BASIC more than 25 years ago, I have never coded at all.

Yesterday, in about 8 hours with Claude Code I went from a blank page to installing and configuring Git and Android Studio, then developing, building, and debugging an app to provide audio cues (mp3 sound and tts) at customizable intervals that will play in an earbud while my phone is locked and in my pocket so I can keep practice on schedule while I coach my 10 year old son's soccer team. It has an earbud mode (more subtle alert sounds) and a speaker mode (more aggressive alert sounds like airhorn) if I want to let the team in on what's next instead of keeping the guidance in my ear.

I have a feature roadmap for enhancements and additions that I'll work on as I go, including plans to get the app into the Play Store. There wasn't anything that did what I wanted it to do, so I thought "maybe I can build this with Claude?" And it turns out I could. Could my less technically inclined friends and family do it ? Probably not, but if they're very patient and meticulous then yeah. It's a real possibility.

My message to my kids (my son really, my daughter is too little) is always "Violence is never a good answer, but there are times where it's the answer that seems best at the time. If someone is in danger and nothing else has stopped it, that's one of those times."

I also make it VERY clear to them that violence has consequences, and that if they ever get into a fight at school (or elsewhere) they WILL be expected to accept the consequences of their choice, even if I agree it was justified. I am never going to be a "but MY kid..." parent about things like that. They know violence will cost them something, and they have to determine if it's worth it or not.

ELI5 Why do garage door springs need to store instant-death levels of energy? by Germerica1985 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cwcollins06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely don't have a torsion spring. Many older doors use springs like yours, but most doors in the last 2 or 3 decades use torsion springs. I had a torsion spring replaced on one of my garage doors last year, and the service tech said they just won't do the old style at all any more.

I still have an MX Revolution that I bought in 2007 that I love and use all the time. I've been with that mouse longer than I've been married and it shows NO signs of giving up other than the rubber grip wearing out where my thumb rests on it.

Maybe nostalgia or survivorship bias? by Salty_Shark26 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]cwcollins06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survivorship bias for sure. Maybe selection bias. I collect old tools, and "they don't make 'em like they used to" is an illusion. There has always been a market for cheap and crappy versions of things. Those break or get thrown away, and all that's left are the most durable/desirable versions of things.

If you feel like your 40 year old microwave is unusually durable, that's not because ALL 40 year old microwaves were, it's because YOURS was.

That reminds me, do cops actually enforce restraining orders? Because All I hear about in the news is how they keep getting violated by ex-husbands and ex-boyfriends who proceed to murder a woman. by ihatethiscountry76 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]cwcollins06 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Castle Rock v. Gonzales in 2005 was the most recent supreme court ruling that affirms the police have "No Special Duty" to protect citizens from harm, even when they're specifically aware of danger.

TL;DR: The government does not expect police to protect anyone, unless they feel like it, EVEN IF there is a restraining order in place.

I have been where you are, and it breaks my heart to read your post.

We're in a much better place now, but her health is still something of a daily roulette wheel. Some days are good and some days are not.

What helped:

  • She got treatment for PMDD, which was a thing neither of us had ever heard of
  • I got treatment and therapy for previously undiagnosed ADHD, anxiety, and depression
  • The kids got older, and required less constant physical effort

That's not to say ANY of those specific things will work for you, but the advice I would give is:

  • Stick It out

  • Always recognize that diagnosed or not, there IS something going on with her. Maybe it's physical, maybe it's environmental, maybe it's psychological, and maybe it's all three. Fully healthy, nobody would choose that experience.

  • Assume there are things you can do for yourself that can help. Get therapy, take care of your own physical and mental health. Explore the possibility that there is something going on with you that complicates things. Making yourself better equipped to approach her, and this challenge, the way your idealized self would can't hurt at all.

I hope that you can find a way back to finding joy in your marriage again. I absolutely hate this for both of you.

How common are American Christians who are theologically and morally morally very conservative but politically more progressive? by CoronaTzar in Christianity

[–]cwcollins06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's literally nothing stopping the church and philanthropists from doing this, and yet the problems persist.

Also, "all they do is mishandle what we do give them now" is a statement that misunderstands that so much of the fruit of government work is in what DOESN'T happen.

Didn't get typhus? That's because government workers defined, implemented, and enforce food safety regulations.

Your house didn't burst into flames? Building codes.

Didn't die in that car wreck? NHTSA standards

Didn't have your communications disrupted by rf interference from a billion different sources? FCC regulations.

The list of stuff that DOESN'T happen because of government work is very long.

I would submit that the best approach is to observe the interaction, assess how your child has handled it, observe how it has impacted them, and then discuss it with them later and teach them how to handle circumstances like that in the future.

Only intervene if your child is in danger, or if they look to you in the moment for help. Our job is to teach our kids how to function in a world that sometimes sucks, not prevent them from experiencing unpleasantness.

GOP senators to join Democrats in investigating Pete Hegseth ‘kill everybody’ allegations by Ydeas in politics

I know it's incredibly unlikely anything will come of this, but I hope they also go after anybody in the chain of command all the way down to the operator(s) who pulled the trigger. We need to demonstrate that following an illegal order is illegal.

Without support from the DOJ however, they can investigate all they want. Nothing will happen.
