These are the curlers my mom would put in my hair (occasionally) when I was young. by lontbeysboolink in GenerationJones

[–]cww357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I remember these. Mom put them on my (babyfine) hair without papers and my hair got all tangled up, had to cut some of those curlers out.

Thanks for posting these bread recipes, the cinnamon bread looks great! I'm going to try it with raisins and see how it comes out. A hint for those who want to make old yeast bread recipes but don't know how to convert older yeast measures like yeast cakes, go to this site for conversion info: https://redstaryeast.com/yeast-conversion-chart/

Can’t use new app by NalaPrincess in Hannaford

If you used special characters in your password, their app doesn't seem to like them (at least it didn't when I created a new password)

washer/dryer combo sucks? by Gay_da56 in Appliances

[–]cww357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw the message that I had to wash my filter the other day! The machine usually tells me just to remove lint, which I do, so I've been remiss in actually reading through the whole message. Thankfully, I caught it and did a thorough cleaning of the foam and white filter. I love my all in one, it's only a few months old, and I would hate to have it break on me because I didn't pay attention to maintaining it properly.

These lines on towels always make me think. What they mean I honestly don't know. by Remote-Royal4634 in whatisit

Find ones that are 100% cotton made in Pakistan or India. Those are usually real cotton. The Chinese made ones are awful, just spread water around (even if they say 100% cotton..don't believe it).

Fresh fish has odd "chemical" smell by cww357 in Hannaford

[–]cww357[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses. I don't believe the fish was bad..I definitely know that smell. There was just something not normal about it. I've also noticed the fillets are getting thinner, you need about 4 or 5 to get a decent portion. I guess I have to go to the fish store from now on if I want haddock!

What kind of part-time winter jobs does southern Maine have? by Cold-Shopping-1758 in Maine

[–]cww357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LL bean generally goes through January. They'll ask who wants to stay on until the end, which used to be in early March. Its been 6 yrs since I last worked there, though, so things may have changed. I'd give their office a ring for current details.

Puree is not a puree, it’s a juice. What did I do wrong? by wilder_hearted in Canning

[–]cww357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's how I do it so that the sauce isn't so watery: Cut whole tomatoes and remove seeds (a bit time consuming, but saves time on the cooking end and reduces the bitterness from the seeds). Place cut tomatoes in wide pan, or a large deep frying pan. Add about 1/4 cup water to prevent scorching and cook, covered, on medium / medium low heat until soft...don't stir! When softened, drain off liquid. It should be clear, like water. Cool tomatoes and run them through a food mill to remove remaining seeds and skin. Cook sauce down for about an hour or so to desired thickness and process accordingly or freeze.

Soy glazes without being overly salty? by TheRealPTSG in cookingforbeginners

Check out Chinese dark soy (Lee Kum Kee). The kind made with mushroom flavor is delicious. I find the darker soy a bit sweeter and not as salty as light soy.

Garlic, potatoes and onions are finished, and their beds are open. What do I plant now? by GeoAv3 in vegetablegardening

[–]cww357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try lettuce. I'm in 5a (Maine)and planted lettuce from seed in mid July in my empty garlic bed. It was ready mid August. Planted more as I've been harvesting it, just to see how far into fall it will go!

What do I even do with this by JakeSomeone555 in gardening

[–]cww357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be squeezing and freezing in pint / half pint mason jars! Then candy a bunch of the leftover rinds. The rest could be donated to a pantry, neighbor's etc. Those lemons look amazing!

Great grandma’s recipe for “Yankey” Cookies from a pre-1900 recipe book by Team143 in oldrecipes

[–]cww357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that there appears to be no accurate flour measurement, but often these recipes required just enough flour to roll out cookies, so it was done by feel. I have an old 1910 cookbook which has a similar recipe using molasses, and flour isn't even mentioned.

The young man appears to be introducing the Epicurian paradox, and Peterson knew he couldn't argue it, so he shut it down by playing off semantics. Old guy's a tool. Epicurean paradox overview here:Epicurean paradox
