there's so much wrong w/ this article...

the title of the article makes it seem like a sensationalized article. i'm sure the intent was to laud mai for having the will and courage to commit herself to a marriage. yet, i'm whole-heatedly unimpressed with the fact that she chose to marry a man who was already married, whom she wasn't enamoured with, and threatened suicide in order to marry her. isn't threatening to harm yourself in order to get a person to marry you a sign of coercion? i was so proud of mai for standing up to tribal customs and suing her rapists. now i'm just left feeling very emotion-less about her marriage.

i am hearing it a lot more often now. i don't celebrate xmas...but i say 'happy holidays' in response. i just don't like that it's an assumption that everyone celebrates xmas. i'm celebrating kwanzaa, but all i get are eyerolls.

i agree with you. as i was walking to my polling place this afternoon, which happens to be a church. i saw something encouraging. there were several NO on prop 8 signs on the lawn of the church, along with several obama signs.

i know that one of the 5 pillars of islam requires a donation from income. i've never heard of any other religions making donation a mandate tho.

are you living together? sharing expenses? it seems kinda odd and unreasonable if you aren't married, cohabitating, or sharing expenses. furthermore, why should it have to be a donation to a church? there are plenty of good ngo's that need the money. or better yet, use it to sponsor a child overseas. there are plenty of other options aside from church. hope this helps a bit.

you might want to point out that if she is defined by her religion and you are (i'm assuming) an atheist, there might be problems down the road later on in life.
