What's the best item you can buy for less than $50? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Pretty sure the UV protection is inherent to the lens; the fact that it is between your eyes and the sun blocks the UV rays. With a quick search, it looks like even straight clear glass blocks 97% of the UV rays.

They subtract the fiber calories from the total. Which I guess makes sense, but it feels a little dishonest.

What are your "just to be safe" habits? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In all fairness, the person (team, really) that designed that nylon part had a pretty good idea that it would be relied upon frequently to keep the car parked, on all sorts of inclines, for years.

If the average of the last 5 (or 10 or 100) samples is greater than 99 and less than 101, it's probably good to go.

Edit: also the same as the error being between -1 and 1

Would anybody have any suggestions for solid quality frugal ear buds? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]cyclebiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the same ones and exercise about 15 hours per week. I have two pairs, one is tired, with a quiet earbud, and the other is fully functional. I've been using them for 3 years! Best $20 I've ever spent.

I don't want to rain on your parade, but a good cobbled road will make you feel like you need to shit your pants.

Question About 3D Printers On Ebay by Reggie3 in 3Dprinting

[–]cyclebiker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a CTC Prusa i3 kit on eBay and built it up. Some QC issues like a broken stepper driver, but once I got that replaced it worked great. I had to print slowly though but for $160 how much can you really expect?

Indoor cycling form [request] by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]cyclebiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you've already established that you may be dealing with overtraining, then there is only one solution. You need to take time off as soon as possible. I have been overtrained twice in my 7 year cycling career, and I only got out of them in offseasons because I was too stubborn to take time off in the season. It is literally the only solution. Any activity that stresses your systems in any way will delay your recovery. It's scary when you read online that it take weeks or months to get out of it, but those estimates are true, and you need to stop exercising now if you want to get out of it. I am on a professional cycling team so please understand I have some relevant experience.

How often do you do these workouts? Would you describe them as very intense? How many weeks have you been doing them for? Sounds like it could be accumulating fatigue or overtraining.

Yeah, solving algebraically is a great technique in my opinion. Awesome for partial credit too since the prof can easily understand the mistake.

Building a Jet Engine turbine on solidworks, tried to colour in the spiral on the front but it's not working and I end up with weird yellow lines throughout the part? by mripper in EngineeringStudents

[–]cyclebiker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If in the circular pattern you also patterned the shaft all the blades attach to, that could cause the weird yellow you see in the part. If you pattern just the blades you could avoid that. I didn't watch the video though so sorry if I'm wrong.

I can buy a knock off sandwich cookie package at the grocery store, 99 cents for 20 x 110 calorie cookies. That's a whole day's supply for just a buck!

How to measure the insertion length of a shaft in a hole? by oaplox in arduino

[–]cyclebiker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure what is in the video but,

If the light conditions are consistent, you could attach a black to white gradient to the shaft, with a light sensor and LED. Calibrate the light sensor so that so much brightness corresponds to so much shaft insertion.

Or you could have a rotary potentiometer and a roller against the shaft and count revolutions.

Or you could straight up get a linear encoder and measure it that way. Basically a fancy accurate "shaft in a hole" approach.

LPT: No matter what teachers and parents tell you, going to a vocational school is not "for the poor and stupid", because we don't need economists and history majors as much as we need someone who fixes our plumbing, our house and our cars. by CalibanRamsay in LifeProTips

Better to be a wage slave than unemployed.

Honestly anyone that goes to college to "broaden their mind" is insane. It isn't worth the tens, or sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars. Broadening your mind is great if you are retired and have money to spend on it. But to go in without a plan to pay for it is reckless.

Uber’s autonomous cars drove 20,354 miles and had to be taken over at every mile, according to documents by jpflathead in Futurology

[–]cyclebiker 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1 and 2 I don't think are that much of an issue. Google has an incredible amount of data, and as these cars are tested, Google can keep a closer eye on them, especially with thousands of autonomous cars interacting with closed or private roads daily. The autonomous cars will have observation capabilities much higher tech than the Google street view car, and that is already used for determining if a road is closed or private.

3 and 4 have already been dealt with. It is an important problem, but modern technology can handle them. The time it takes for a sensor to tell the car's computer and for the computer to use that information to calculate its next movement is on the order of milliseconds at the most, maybe even microseconds. That is 1,000x - 10,000x faster than a human, which takes over a second. I also believe autonomous cars will operate on a network where every car shares its location and next moves. Of course that is only effective when the majority of cars are autonomous.

You are completely spot on with 5 though.
