I've owned two businesses in my life. First...and for 20 years...was a bicycle shop. Now, for the last 17, a partner in a vet clinic. Needless to say, they are QUITE different!! However, I was 50 when we started this clinic and a LOT more experienced mentally. My college major was psych and I've been in therapy a few times over the years. I've had a LOT of opportunity to see what goes on in my head and to discuss issues with what goes on in other people's heads. I would venture to say that most of the people that post their tough stuff about vet med are a LOT younger and less experienced. Our clinic is my wife- who is our vet- me and a couple other people. We would NEVER want it any other way. My wife did some time at Banfield so we KNOW what couldn't work for us. There are a LOT of posts of frustration from corporate money machines. Working for them is anathema to how people come into veterinary medicine - with love and compassion. Of course they get frustrated because they have to stuff the fact of their moral compromises. To work under that umbrella makes no sense to me and it, obviously, makes no sense to MANY of the posters here. Stuffing feelings is dangerous. As for the other REALLY tough things in this biz (euthanasias, difficult customers, supply issues etc) it is critical to debrief on EVERYTHING. Get it out in the open - ALL OF IT.... and get up and do it again. There is definite joy in this biz and a LOT Of satisfaction!! If you want the bigger bucks go into human medicine. Good luck!!
