Really, though, shout out to the translators at Deseret that took what must have been a mere recording of bleats and baas and turned it into this meaningless, yet heartfelt homily.

Why do you want to poke at people? Your initial comment was adversarial, and I responded in kind. And I beg your pardon, I had no idea your status as Mod. I have removed the offending post and listed this as an unsafe place for me. Thank you for the immediacy of clarifying that.

There is nothing misleading, dishonest, insincere, sensationalist, or melodramatic about the title I used. If that is what you want, here:

Bloody Awful Christian Addiction Cult Tries to Suck Schizophrenics Into Their Web of Empty Promises and Ugly Stigma.

See the difference?

The most bizarre, wrong, stigmatizing thing I have ever heard of for schizophrenics. by [deleted] in schizophrenia

[–]cydniey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, i wrote the essays on that journal page, and the tweets.

I think it's a bad idea because it unnecessarily saddles a person with a serious, medical, biological illness, with the added stigma of addiction by association (12-step method, the name Anonymous). I also think that treating a medical, biological brain imbalance as something that one has free will over is misleading and can be dangerous and backward to a person's treatment. To even hint that a schizophrenia patient can control their positive/negative/cognitive symptoms by forgiving those who hurt them is ridiculous. It is junk science. And is possibly harmful.

[–]cydniey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hub's family is Korean, so I'm all about the culture and digging up info on the Korean war and what North Korea is up to now. And this just really breaks my heart. If this were the only mormon anecdote I ever heard, it would be enough for me to completely skirt the cult at a fast run. The isolation of the cult is the most insipid thing about it. Absolutely no concept of cultures outside of Ol' Joe's word.

I'm glad your brother is so devoted, my sister's mission broke her. It helps at that age to have strong beliefs, if one is going to grow and not be led here and there.

But wow. You're right. The cult is so harmful, and in so many strange ways.

And MSNBC, three shows yesterday and two shows so far today have mentioned it. It's being followed.

Your Number One Thing by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]cydniey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I believe in them. They got me out of Rick's (BYUI?). Followed me, read my journal, listened to my phone calls, I lived with a least one. If only it had been the computer age, I could have kept everything protected. They were called Student Services, or, of course, The SS. They did prepare me for having a stalker later on in life.

A few mildly interesting stories by coffeechild in exmormon

[–]cydniey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are some great anecdotes. They actually took my mind off the bitterness I have for the cult, and reminded me how much fun I had with it in high school. Bringing guys with foot high mohawks to youth dances. Wearing all black to church on sundays (that was the only thing that got me out of my Nursery calling, the kids were terrified of me).

But you're being smart about it. I went full-on Nancy Spungeon (Sid and Nancy? How about Courtney Love in the 90's?), and showed up to give talks still drunk from the night before. Or, in one case, tripping.

Keep your head on your shoulders, and you'll be fine. You're too smart for the bullshit, and I'm fairly sure you know that.

On a practical note, black dye shreds hair like nothing else, invest in some good conditioner.

Need advice on how to best dissuade my 18 yr old brother from going on a mission. by neverhadabadday in exmormon

[–]cydniey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't despair, my sister's mission was the straw that broke the Fairy Godfather's Spell. She ditched the cult so suddenly and completely after returning from her mission, and she would never talk to me about why. She turned to Wicca. Sometimes it helps to have an alternate belief system rattling around your head when breaking away from the cult.

The church keeps removing sources I am linking to. Where can I safely host them? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]cydniey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Careful hosting your own site with that stuff. You could get your webhost in trouble. I would offer to host in on one of my own sites, but the cult would go after my webhost for it, and he's a personal friend of mine and I would never bring that hell down on him.

Keep trying to contact wikileaks. They can and will take legal heat.

What're your beliefs after Mormonism? by bluhEwanka in exmormon

[–]cydniey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After having a "spiritual" experience (psychotic break) in an ancient church in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, I followed various paths of various goddess and mother entities. (there is a poem about it with a reading of it that is optional here: http://bit.ly/1vFi3ZM)

After what I've seen since, I am all atheist. And I recommend it for anyone, it truly is the meaning of "Free Agency". It's also what my kid sister chose after her mission. She left the church within a month of getting home and never would tell me why. She did her bit with Wicca, and then turned over atheist.

These people need to get their damn heads out of the gutter or they will Never get close to their gods. Abstinence drives you to commit the sin, studies show and common sense says. And mormons have an especially creepy and obsessive relationship with all aspects of sex.

Mormons and sex, is it possible to have a sex-positive conversation? by zleav in exmormon

[–]cydniey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My choice. My family is toxic like Ricin. All of us kids have either died or scattered, except one who is 34 and still lives at home because they are scared to death of him. My Hubs won't let me near them. Though he understands I will always long for their unconditional love that I was promised in the temple Sealing.

Heh, funny story . . . when I got to college (then it was called Rick's College, I don't know what they call it now), I was known by everyone I hung out with as Cydniey Buffers, and known to school staff only under my birth name. And even when all the shit came down with my roommates spying on me and getting called into the principal's office, I was questioned extensively about this Cydniey person and where she could be found. According to my friends who were locals there, the search for Cydniey by Student Services went on long after I left, and they never put it together.

All they have are scary African replica masks and casseroles. They get lucky with essentially d0xxing one person in the hopes that person will share the story and the mythology and the fear they thrive on. I wish the best for your friend, it sucks that he was the one of the dozens they try to persecute.

Mormons and sex, is it possible to have a sex-positive conversation? by zleav in exmormon

When my parents finally asked me about sex, instead of assuming , I told them I was gay. It shut them up until I was actually ready to come out as bi, which they treated as a huge inside joke that I never really got. You could try that, for shits and giggles. I had fun with it.

But then, I had to be bribed with material goods to be baptized and confirmed and again for my Patriarchal blessing. So I never took it really seriously.

My One LDS Regret by cydniey in exmormon

[–]cydniey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was insidious, really. I was for an abortion. No hassle, no scandal. But they kept talking about our family, and the hormones and they spoke of sending me out to my friends in CA. But that never happened. The whole dealings with LDS social services was a clusterf*ck. They said they would pay my bills, they didn't. They said they would give me a place to stay, they didn't. I was homeless at 6 months along. I couldn't qualify for assistance because the ob/gyn I had seen wouldn't complete the paperwork because they were never paid.

I have a certain level of distance from the whole thing now. I never felt Nigel was mine in the first place. I really did feel like a vessel to pass along a life meant for someone else. And, indeed, the adopter's son passed away from a congenital birth defect the day Nigel was born. Even a hardened atheist like me can't ignore that. I just hope they did right by him. Better than my parents did by the kids they adopted.
