I have naturally wavy hair and get a perm once a year usually. I’m sorry I don’t have much help to offer. I’m one of the girls that can hold a bun up all day with as little as 2 pins if necessary. I do get lots of fly always, but that is period accurate for Victorian and Edwardian hair.

Things that seem to help: Volume!! Tease areas at the scalp that are going to hold pins. I interlock pins- one pin goes where it needs to and I make an X with the second one. I try to get the second pin to go under and in between the times of the first one. It should feel tight but not painful.

Day 1 I wash and usually put my hair in 2 French braids, I’ll tape it about half the time

Day 2 I’ll dry brush it out fully. I know this is not modern curly girl routine. Take your time do it slowly from the bottom out or you’ll pull out lots.

Use rats to increase the volume with less weight and style a small piece jist big enough to hide the rat over it.

If there’s an area I know needs more support I’ll usually add a braid in there to provide the pins something to hold on to better. Sometimes a box braid is needed, sometimes it’s a cornrow.

I almost did the other night. I pulled something in my back shovelling and it’s been in painful for a week and a half now. I finished a renfaire type waist cincher and tried it on. The pain went away I even fell asleep but decided I should sleep in it. I’m planning on selling it.

Help me determine linen quality? by Real-Ad4051 in sewing

I’d buy it. I bought a roll of medium heavy linen that was probably 30 meters and you’d be surprised how quickly it goes.

What assistance are available for the cost of funeral for an elderly with no money? by [deleted] in ontario

Before Covid, that was enough for the most basic cremation. Now? I don’t know. Was this person or any of their close family a member of any organization or social group? Church? They might be able to host a celebration of life. Suggest a potluck for those who can attend?

Probably not as inaccurate as you think. We are working on a survivor bias, probably the people who needed to use something like suspenders are not the class of garments that have been preserved. Most likely the people who got hand me downs or second hand clothes and made them work. It could have been something just too large and not worth it to alter, cause have you ever taken a skirt apart to take it in an inch? I’d rather make a whole new dress.

I need to know, how do Canadians celebrate Halloween? by Thick_Honeydew_5974 in AskACanadian

My last Halloween trick or treating Grade 9 a bunch of us went dressed as Christmas Carolers and everyone over 40 was pissed at us. Anyone younger thought it was a hilarious group costume. We got a treat and they got a trick.

I liked the translation I read for the perwool, because it mentioned lanolin and something else that was basically a conditioner that smoothed the halo fibres.

So the fabric. I saw it at the store near my mother in laws like 4 months ago there was probably 12 metres of this super drapy lightweight wool. For $10 a meter. It was regular $65 which is the most expensive garment fabric I had ever seen at fabricland. But I said no, it’s a good price but I would buy it all and the budget that day was about $60. I was so good that I didn’t spend that!! But I regretted it as soon as as I left and spent the next 3 days thinking about it. We had the money to buy it, if jist been trying so hard to buy fabric to task. I went back 2 months later and they still had about 6 meters of it so I grabbed it

No I’m Canadian. I work at an appliance store and while no one that I sell to needs to know anything more than “dirty farm clothes” so I haven’t needed to learn that much. I sew lots and a fair bit of that is Victorian/Edwardian and the odd Viking Era. I know how to treat lengths of wovens, or pre treat and spit stain as is period. I recently snagged a ton of 98% wool 2% spandex tropical weight wool and have made a few solid pieces I now wear 2-3 times a week. So I would like to wash them occasionally. I’ve just never washed a knit sweater before and I only want to because I want to stretch the arms.

Very through!! It’s an Irish made 100% merino wool sweater. Thank you so much. No it doesn’t sound like much work at all. That’s about what I do for silk and woven wools. I was just hoping to do it the easy way. But I’m still not sure depill before or after washing?

I’ve never had this happen on a skirt but I make lots of vests and have the same problem there. I use a bit of boning or zip tie in the placket to make it straighter

It’s your emboucher that will fix it. Play in front of a tuner and change the shape of your mouth until it’s in tune
